Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 2019-03-20

All eyes will be on Ichiro Suzuki when the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics open the 2019 season Wednesday in Tokyo. Suzuki, at 45 years, 149 days, will become the second-oldest player to start on Opening Day - Julio Franco was 45 years, 227 days when he started at first base for Atlanta in 2004 - as the Mariners honor the future Hall of Famer with the opportunity to play a Major League Baseball game or two in his native land.

"I'm excited for him," Seattle manager Scott Servais told reporters about Suzuki, who went 2-for-25 this spring in Arizona. "It hasn't been a great spring training for him offensively. But if there's anybody who can turn it on for a few days, it's certainly Ichiro." The games in Japan are likely to be the final ones of Suzuki's career as Oakland manager Bob Melvin braces for what might happen. "He's the kind of guy you don't want to come up in a big situation because he's had a flair for the dramatic over his career," Melvin told reporters. "We feel like we'll be up for the challenge." For the first time in 11 years, Felix Hernandez will not be the Mariners Game 1 starter as Marco Gonzales takes the ball opposite Mike Fiers, who will also make his first Opening Day start.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (2018: 13-9, 4.00 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Mike Fiers (2018: 12-8, 3.56)

Gonzales had a rough spring training, yielding 14 runs over 13 1/3 innings after giving up 15 (13 earned) over 53 frames in his previous three preseasons. The 27-year-old Colorado native was 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in three games versus Oakland in 2018, striking out 15 across 15 1/3 innings. Matt Chapman (.278, 24 home runs, 68 RBIs last season) is the only Athletic with any significant success against Gonzales, going 4-for-10 with three doubles.

Fiers was also ineffective in spring training, permitting six runs and three homers in 6 1/3 innings over two outings. The 33-year-old Floridian, who split time between Detroit and Oakland last season with the clubs going 21-9 in his starts, went 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against Seattle last season. Fiers has held the Mariners to a collective .227 batting average, striking out designated hitter candidates Edwin Encarnacion and Jay Bruce a combined 13 times in 43 at-bats.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ichiro is one of 32 players with 3,000 hits (3,089) and 320 have come against Oakland - his most against any team.

2. Athletics LF Kris Davis won the AL home run title with 48 last season and has hit 133 over the last three years.

3. Seattle has won the last six season series, including 10-9 in 2018 after winning 37 of 57 meetings from 2015-17.

North Carolina Central Eagles vs. North Dakota State Bison Preview and Predictions 2019-03-20

North Carolina Central takes on North Dakota State in the East Region's First Four play-in game on Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio. The Eagles, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champs, and the Bison, the winners of the Summit League, are both seeded 16th and the winner will face the top-overall seed Duke on Friday.

North Carolina Central went just 10-6 in conference play, finishing in a tie for third in the MEAC standings, but knocked off top-seeded Norfolk State 50-47 in the title game to earn an automatic berth. Senior forward Zacarry Douglas led the Eagles with 10 points in the championship game - all during a 25-6 second-half run - but it was defense that got the Eagles to the NCAA tournament as they held the Spartans to 34 percent shooting. North Dakota State went 9-7 in conference play to finish tied for third in the Summit League standings but upset second-seeded Omaha 73-63 in the championship game to earn the invite to Dayton. Junior guard Vinnie Shahid scored 22 while earning tournament MVP honors and the Bison knocked down 10-of-24 3-pointers in the win over the Mavericks to earn the school's third tournament selection in the past six years.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL (18-15): The Eagles found themselves trailing by 10 at the half in the MEAC title game but stepped up defensively and allowed just four field goals in the second half as they rallied for the win. N.C. Central led the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 66.3 points, while also finishing first in scoring margin (plus-5.1). Senior center Raasean Davis, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the MEAC Tournament, is the unquestioned team leader, posting team highs in scoring (14.6) and rebounds (8.9).

ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA STATE (18-15): The Bison let a 14-point halftime lead evaporate in the Summit League title game but used a 9-0 run late in the second half to break a tie and cruise to the win. Much like the Eagles, defense is a strong point for the Bison as they finished second in the conference in scoring defense, allowing an average of 72.2. Shahid led the team in scoring (12.8 points) and assists (2.7), while junior guard Tyson Ward averages a team-high 6.3 rebounds and is second in scoring with 12.3 points.

TIP-INS

1. The Eagles are in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season but have yet to win a game.

2. The Bison are 1-3 in the tournament all-time, including an 80-75 overtime upset of No. 5 seed Oklahoma in 2015.

3. The Eagles have won three straight and six of seven, while the Bison's current four-game win streak comes on the heels of a three-game losing streak.

St. John's Red Storm vs. Arizona State Sun Devils Preview and Predictions 2019-03-20

Bobby Hurley and Chris Mullin had plenty of positive NCAA Tournament experiences as players but they'll butt heads as coaches when No. 11 seeds Arizona State and St. John's meet Wednesday in the First Four at Dayton, Ohio. Hurley won a pair of NCAA titles (1991, 1992) while a point guard at Duke while Mullin helped St. John's to the 1985 Final Four.

The Red Storm limped down the stretch with four losses in five games, including an 86-54 setback against Marquette on Thursday in the Big East quarterfinals that marked their worst defeat of the season, but did enough to make the Big Dance for the first time under fourth-year coach Mullin. "St. John's was the last team in," NCAA Tournament selection committee chair Bernard Muir said on CBS after the bracket was revealed. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, are playing their best basketball, winning six of the last eight games after Friday's 79-75 overtime loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 semifinals as the No. 2 seed. Hurley proved prophetic after the setback, telling reporters: "When the committee looks at our season, I think that we'll be rewarded for being great in the non-conference, beating the No. 1 team in the country at one point (Kansas in December) and having a very strong effort in the league."

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (21-12): Junior guard Shamorie Ponds (team-highs of 19.5 points and 5.2 assists) was 4-for-14 from the field while scoring 13 against Marquette after averaging 22.0 in his previous three games. Junior guard Mustapha Heron (14.9 points), a transfer from Auburn, missed three of the last 10 games with right knee tendinitis and has averaged 11.3 points while playing in last four contests. Sophomore guard LJ Figueroa (14.3 points, club-best 6.2 rebounds) recorded five points and six boards Thursday after averaging 17.5 points in his previous four games.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (22-10): Senior forward Zylan Cheatham (11.8 points, team-high 10.4 rebounds) was the only Pac-12 player to average a double-double this season, recording 13 double-doubles and missing nine others by a total of five points and six rebounds after going for 14 and nine Friday. Luguentz Dort, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, averaged a club-most 16.1 points and reached double figures in 17 of 20 conference games. Sophomore guard Remy Martin (13.4 points, team-best 5.1 assists) scored 14 versus Oregon despite playing with a left groin injury and is 6-for-18 from the field in his last two games.

TIP-INS

1. The winner meets sixth-seeded Buffalo, the Mid-American Conference champion, Friday in Tulsa, Okla., in the West Region. Hurley went 42-20 as Buffalo coach from 2013-15 before taking the Sun Devils reins.

2. Arizona State beat the Red Storm 82-70 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Los Angeles on Dec. 8, 2017 with sophomore F Romello White (8.7 points, 5.3 rebounds) scoring 22 in his seventh career game and Ponds recording 19.

3. The Big East had four teams reach the NCAA Tournament to include Marquette (five seed), Villanova (six) and Seton Hall (10), while the Pac-12 is also represented by Washington (nine) and Oregon (12).

PRESIDENTSKY - In this race here, this thoroughbred has clearly shown signs that he likes the grass. His speed ratings are the highest in the field for this distance/surface. Based on his last TrackMaster turf figure alone, I'm going to play this entrant. The improved speed figures over the last 3 races is great. Metz drops him in this clash in shape and ready to win. Coming off a fourth place finish at Turf Paradise, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable odds today. KODIAK KING - The Mar 3rd contest at Turf Paradise was at a class level of (99). Dropping to a lower level drastically, so he should be in a good position. This gelding has the top turf fig in his last race. It doesn't take a college grad like The Brain to figure this here horse has a good chance.

Hasn't been near the track since then though. Not a positive sign. KICKENIT - Notched a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time around the track in a Starter Allowance race on February 27th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that figure.

I think about WOLFBLADE here. Has to be given consideration here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me lean toward this filly. Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last race. AUSSIE GOLD - With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Delgado should have this filly in excellent position to win the contest. Arizona State beat St John’s 82-70 LY at Staples Center; ASU won six of last eight games overall; they get 22.3% of their points on foul line. St John’s subs play minutes #347, so they better not get in foul trouble. Hurley is 0-2 in NCAA’s as a head coach; this is Mullin’s first NCAA game as a coach. Johnnies started season 12-0, playing the #327 non-conference schedule, then went 9-12 in last 21 games- they beat Pac-12 cellar dweller Cal 82-79. Neither team subs very much. Wednesday’s other tournament games
Motivation is the main variable in these “other” tournaments; I’ll give you some stats and some knowledge, but these games are really tough to decipher from the outside.

Toledo won five of its last six games, got upset in first MAC tourney game; Rockets are #86 experience team that gets 38.5% of its points behind the arc. Toledo is 1-2 vs top 100 teams this year, losing twice to Buffalo, by 30-6 points- they beat Cal-Irvine. Xavier won by 27-21 in its two games vs MAC teams this season; they’re experience team #120 that won 7 of its last 9 games.

Norfolk State was 2-10 in its pre-conference schedule, with three other non-D-I wins; they lost by 19 to Michigan, 17 to South Carolina- they’re experience team #78 that turns ball over 20.6% of the time. Alabama lost seven of its last ten games; they’re experience team #208 that was 9-3 in its pre-conference schedule. Tide won by 20-8-10 points in its three non-top 200 games.

Harvard lost Ivy title game to arch-rival Yale Sunday afternoon; quick turnaround here for #258 experience team that beat Saint Mary’s but lost by 20 to North Carolina. Crimson turns ball over 22.3% of time. Georgetown was 10-3 in its pre-conference games, is 5-6 in its last 11 games; they’re experience team #263 that plays pace #23- they haven’t played since Thursday.

Sam Houston State won Southland by two games but lost in its first tourney game; Bearkats are #28 experience team that lost to Clemson by 15, Georgia by 11- they force turnovers 21.4% of time. TCU was disappointed not to make NCAA’s; they lost several players during year- their bench plays minutes #321. Horned Frogs lost seven of last ten games. Their motivation is a ?

Rumors are strong that Nebraska will fire coach Miles as soon as the Huskers lose in this event; how long will they stay? Nebraska beat Big East’s Seton Hall by 23, Creighton by 19 back in the fall, when Huskers had high hopes. Butler lost five of its last six games, despite being experience team #117- they play a slow (#260) pace, lost by 3 to Indiana in their only Big 14 game.

Long trip east for Dan Majerle’s Grand Canyon team, which is 20-13, 12-7 in WAC; Antelopes are experience team #99 that lost by 8 to Nevada, 7 to Seton Hall, 9 to Utah, 38 to Texas- they lost WAC final Saturday. West Virginia is young team with 14-20 record; they were 4-3 in last seven games after they ran couple guys off the team— this is prep work for next season.

Central Michigan is 23-11, losing MAC semis by 4 to Buffalo; Chippewas are experience team #27 that played a horrible (#346) pre-conference schedule. CMU shot 38.3% on arc, best in league, 46.9% inside arc, worst in MAC. DePaul is 15-15, but 7-1 against teams outside top 100; Blue Demons lost six of their last eight games- they’re experience team #79.

Howard lost by 21 to Little Rock, by 14 to Appalachian State, two Sun Belt teams; Bison are #313 experience team that plays pace #32- they’re 3-8 outside the MEAC. Coastal Carolina lost seven of last ten games after starting 6-3 in Sun Belt; Chanticleers are experience team #195 that beat NC Central by 4, their only MEAC opponent. CCU turn ball over 20.2% of time (#290).

Stony Brook’s coach has already bolted to Ohio U; Seawolves are 24-8 despite being experience team #305- they split last six games, are 12-3 outside America East (#257 non-conf schedule). /South Florida lost seven of its last eight D-I games; Bulls are experience team #328 that turns ball over 22.9% of time- they also force turnovers 22.2% of time- they shoot only 32.7% on arc.

Cal-Baptist is in its first year of D-I basketball, so they’re fired up to be playing; Lancers lost by 3 at Tulsa, lost by 3 at Cal-Irvine, 35 at Nevada- they’re experience team #174 that lost four of its last six games. LMU is 20-11, its first winning season in seven years; Lions are 10-2 outside WCC, beating UNLV, Georgetown- they force turnovers 21.2% of time (#40).

UAB comes north after winning six of last nine games; Blazers are experience team #188 that plays slow (#307) pace- they won three of their last four true road games. UAB is only 6-5 outside C-USA (#305 non-conf schedule). Brown is 19-11 but didn’t make 4-team Ivy tourney after going 7-7. Bears are experience team #177 that forces turnovers 21.4% of time (#34).

Texas Southern won at Baylor/Oregon before Christmas, but was 3-8 in pre-SWAC games, with two other non-D-I wins; they lost by 8 at Lamar in their only Southland game. TSU is #5 experience team that plays pace #4. New Orleans lost in Southland final; they’re experience team #246 that forces turnovers 22.6% of time (#17).

Grambling is 3-7 outside SWAC; they’re shooting 39.7% on arc (#6). Tigers are experience team #60 that subs a lot (bench minutes #45) but turns ball over 22.2% of time. Rio Grande Valley won eight of last 11 games; they beat SWAC champ Prairie View by 13 in November. Vaqueros are #72 experience team but have #334 eFG%, shooting 31% on arc, 45.8% inside arc.

Green Bay is 7-4 in its last 11 games; they’re #103 experience team that plays pace #12- they beat Belmont back in December. Phoenix split their last four road games. East Tennessee State won four of last six games but lost to Wofford in SoCon semis; Bucs are experience team #257 that is 7-4 outside SoCon. ETSU’s opponents shoot 38.8% on the arc (#344).

Long trip west for Presbyterian squad that is experience team #286- they went 9-7 in Big South. Blue Hose is shooting 38% on arc (#28) they get 41.4% of their points on arc; they’re not a good defensive team. Seattle won five of its last seven games; their last two wins were in OT; they’re experience team #212 who are 10-3 outside the WAC (non-conf #342).

Southern Miss won 12 of its last 17 games; they’re experience team #22 that is 3rd-shortest team in country. Eagles won four of their last six true road games. Love the value here with Cleveland as a near double-digit dog at home against the Bucks. The Cavs have the 3rd worst record in the NBA and simply are going to be showing value against a lot of teams down the stretch, especially at home, as the public just can't stomach betting on bad teams.
The key is looking for the ideal times to take them and I think this is one of them. Cleveland has won 5 of 7 at home since the All-Star break and simply are a much better team than their record. Kevin Love has only played in 16 games and they have been a lot more competitive since he returned. Rookie Collin Sexton has also taken his game to another level. He's averaging 22.7 ppg in March (only averaged 13.3 ppg in January).
Let's also not overlook the fact that the Bucks have been struggling here of late. Milwaukee is just 5-4 in their last 9 and are having to deal with the injury to Malcolm Brogdon. There's also a chance Giannis doesn't play or is limited, as he had to sit out their last game with an ankle injury. Take Cleveland!

The Houston Rockets will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back Wednesday after a shootout win over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. They won’t have much left in the tank after facing a Hawks team that ranks 1st in the league in pace. They are also expected to rest Eric Gordon, and he may not be the only one.
Now the Rockets have to face a rested Grizzlies team that will be working on three days’ rest after last playing on Saturday. It’s also a Memphis team that has been great at home here of late. Indeed, the Grizzlies are 4-1 SU & 4-1 ATS in their last five home games with four upset wins over the Magic, Jazz, Blazers and Lakers.
The Rockets are 4-11-1 ATS in there last 16 games vs. a team with a losing record. Houston is 7-14 ATS as a road favorite this season. The Rockets are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games following an ATS win. The Grizzlies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games. Memphis is 5-0 ATS in its last five vs. Western Conference opponents. Bet the Grizzlies Wednesday.

San Antonio is playing its best basketball winning nine games in a row. DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge are each playing at very high levels. So is there any reason to step in against the Spurs? In this case, yes. The Spurs are in a sandwich spot off a huge home win against the Warriors this past Monday and taking on the Rockets on Friday. The Heat are at least a tier below the Spurs. But they are playing well, too, going 7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS. The Heat rank No. 3 in the NBA defensively, hold a point guard advantage with Goran Dragic back healthy and have been at their best on the road where they have covered 73 percent of their past 26 away contests.

I'll take my chances here with the Sun Devils laying the short number against the Red Storm. There's no denying the Pac-12 was down this year, but I think people are just assuming ASU will struggle because of that. This is a team that beat Mississippi State, Utah State, Kansas and Georgia in non-conference (also lost by just 6 to Nevada). They had won 6 of 7 before a heartbreaking OT loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals.
While Arizona State heads to the Big Dance playing some of it's best basketball, I'm not so sure St. John's deserves to be here. The Red Storm went 8-10 in a Big East that was pretty average after the top two of Marquette and Villanova. They come in having lost 4 of 5 and were embarrassed 86-54 by Marquette in the Big East Tournament. A game they had to be going into thinking they needed to win to make the NCAA Tournament.
St. John's is a very small team and have almost no depth. They use a 4-guard lineup and all 5 starters tend to play 30+ mins. I think that makes this a horrible matchup. Sun Devils are solid on the board and one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country. They also like to push the pace and are at their best when in transition. I think the Red Storm are going to wear down and could really be in trouble if fouls start to add up. Give me Bobby Hurley and the Sun Devils -1.5!

It's the First Four round as Arizona State takes on St. John's. The Sun Devils have won six of their last eight and want to push the pace when they can. They put up 75 points on Oregon's stout defense and have scored 70 or more in four straight and 10 of their last 12. Luguentz Dort, Remy Martin, Zylan Cheatham and Rob Edwards are their biggest threats with several others being able to contribute. St. John's brings some balance with five double digit scorers led by the potent backcourt of Shamorie Ponds and Mustapha Heron. The Red Storm specialize in playing high scoring games and have gone hot and cold when it comes to defense. They allowed 86 points to Marquette last time out and 74 to DePaul. This team seems to want to just outscore everyone and sometimes they can do that while they can't other times. I think this one is going to see plenty of points. The only worry is the neutral court settings messing with these teams, but they all just played on neutral courts in their tourneys. Give me the over.

OK, I will buy into the Tim Miles/Nebraska story continuing tonight in front of the home crowd in Lincoln as the Cornhuskers play in this first round NIT contest versus fading Butler.

The Bulldogs come in with back-to-back losses that have dropped them to 16-16 on the year. Butler is also just 1-5 straight up their last 6 games, and have won exactly twice in their last 8 games overall!

The Cornhuskers may be shorthanded, but this is their first home game since their heroic run in the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago last week, as the "lame duck"??? Miles got his team to go all-in with outright dog wins over Rutgers and Maryland before they bowed out in a close one against Wisconsin.

Overall, the Huskers are on a 3-1 straight up run, and a 4-0 against the spread run as they look to continue postseason play here in 2019.

Butler is just 4-12 straight up, and 5-11 against the spread on the road this year.

Nebraska has won 12 of their 17 at home this season, and they have gotten major step-up play from both Glynn Watson Jr., James Palmer Jr., with Isaiah Roby coming into his own this postseason, as they continue to excel with just 6 scholarship players on the active roster.

I doubt they will have the steam to go all the way to New York City, but I would not at all be surprised if they come out "guns-blazing" tonight and simply put this Butler team in their rear-view mirror. Over their last 5 games, Nebraska is averaging nearly 10 points per game, and 4 rebounds per game more than the sliding Bulldogs.

Go ahead and lay it with Nebraska to continue this interesting story of Tim Miles and his coaching future in Lincoln.
