We have picked Germany to win the World Cup and we really like them on Saturday to roll over their neighbors Austria. Germany breezed through World Cup qualifying wrapping up the group stage with a 5-1 win over Azerbaijan, but since that win, Germany have drawn three and lost one. The one loss coming in their last Friendly against Brazil which ended 1-0. This was Germany's first loss as the home team in 12-matches and first lost at home in 10-matches. The loss to Brazil also snapped Germany's 22-match unbeaten run. Away from home or as the away team Germany are unbeaten in their last 11-matches, drawing their last away match 0-0 at England. For the host, Austria they have won six-matches in a row and are unbeaten in their last seven overall. Austria beat the World Cup host Russia on Wednesday 1-0 with their most notable win coming against Uruguay at home which ended 2-1. At home Austria are on a four-match winning streak and unbeaten in their last eight overall. Austria will face Brazil next week in their last Friendly before they watch the World Cup on tv. Not banking of Weaver for St Louis here as the was lit up last week against this same Pirate team for 4 runs in 5 innings before getting yanked. Monday, he allowed the Brewers 4 runs in 4 innings. Kuhl for the Pirates on the hill today has given up 1 run or less in 3 out of his last 5 starts. Rumors fly that Weaver is going to get bumped from the rotation and I feel this start will not be a good one, especially with the Pirates off a confidence building 4-0 yesterday after an 8 run losing effort on Thursday. I say that because I think Kuhl will get run support here.

Gio Gonzalez on the hill, one of the best pitchers in MLB in May and they need him today ( he never allowed more than 2 earned runs in any game all last month). The Nats have lost 2 in a row to the Braves and lost the lead in the Division race and ended up scoreless behind a 2-hitter pitched by ATL last night. I expect Gio to get it done. Interesting set up here as McCarthy was one of the worst pitchers in May with over a 7 ERA, 3 out of 5 starts he allowed 5 runs plus, and frankly I think the Nats find some offense here today in do or die mode and Gio should carry them 6 to 7+ innings.

Yes, Unders have hurt me this week but I bank on good pitching here. Archer for Tampa has allowed 1 run and 10 hits in his last 18 innings. Gonzales for Seattle has no allowed a run in 19+ innings his last 3 and just 11 hits, and in 60 innings pitched this year has struck out 53 batters. Neither pitcher has great run support.

The Nationals were riding a 6-game winning streak heading into Atlanta but have lost two straight including a 4-0 shutout last night. The Nats only mustered two hits in that game and will be pissed off to play better. We really like their chances to get themselves back in the win column as they will be going up against Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy is old - and similar to our Ian Kennedy fade last night - can't be trusted to turn in a quality start against a lineup as potent as the Nationals. McCarthy owns an ERA north of 5.00 and gave up 5 runs on 9 hits last time out to the Mets. The Nationals will send out Gio Gonzalez to the mound and he's put together a solid start to the season, 6-2 record, 2.10 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. He is coming off a gem where he gave up just 2 runs to a potent Yankees lineup and we expect him to turn in a similar performance tonight to help his team get back in the win column. The Nationals are 12-3 in their last 15 games after losing the first 2 games of a series and are 4-1 in Gio's last 5 starts overall. The Braves haven't fared well lately against lefties, going just 2-5 in their last seven at home against a southpaw. We view this as a statement game for the Nationals, especially if they want to get back to even par with the Braves atop the NL East.

In a weird scheduling quirk, the 1-2 New York Liberty travel to Indiana to take on the 0-5 Fever. The Liberty came up big in their last game, beating Dallas to get their first win of the season. They used a 35-point fourth quarter to get the win, but other than that quarter, they have been very suspect on offense. We expect a return to form for the Liberty and a big letdown spot in this matchup against a Fever team that starts 4 rookies and are very defense minded when they play mid-tier teams like the Liberty. Indiana has already played the likes of Connecticut, Minnesota and LA, so the Liberty should be a matchup they get up for and potentially break into the win column. The Liberty are also a well coached defensive team and will be eager to improve on the 89 points they allowed Dallas to score last time out. The Liberty have played to the under 8 of their lsat 9 games following a straight up win, and are 9-2 to the under in their last 12 games overall. The Fever are also 9-2 to the under in the last 11 playing on extended rest. Also, the under has hit in 7 of the last 9 meetings between these two teams. With two defense minded teams doing battle, we expect an ugly, low-scoring ball game.
