Inside The Huddle Monday

#431 CLEVELAND @ #432 WASHINGTON
Line: Redskins -2, Total: 41

Johnny Manziel is already the headlining the marquee. "Johnny Football" and his Cleveland Browns will put a period on Week #2 of the NFL's preseason action (8:00 PM EST) on Monday night when they visit the Washington Redskins. Last week, the Browns opened the preseason with veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer as the starter but all eyes were on Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner out of Texas A&M.

Hoyer completed 6-of-14 passes for 92 yards in a 13-12 loss at Detroit before being replaced by Manziel, who was drafted by Cleveland with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of May's draft. Manziel connected on 7-of-11 passes in his debut for 63 yards and showed off his top-tier movement skills by adding an additional 27 rushing yards. "They both did some things more suited to their skill set," said Browns first- year coach Mike Pettine when talking about his QBs.

Manziel is expected to split first-team reps with Hoyer this week against the Redskins. "It'll be exciting. There's a lot about Johnny Football that's exciting to watch," Washington coach Jay Gruden said when asked about facing Manziel. "All we're going to do is focus on ourselves though moving forward -- what we're going to do, how we're going to prepare." Gruden, another first-year head coach, got his first victory last week with a 23-6 win over New England.

The Redskins outgained the Patriots, 387-270, including a 177-63 advantage in rushing yards. Washington had eight different players register a rushing attempt, led by rookie sixth-round pick Lache Seastrunk, who posted team and game highs in carries (12) and rushing yards (63). "It was great. It was an exciting experience coming out of the tunnel, seeing all the fans here," Gruden said. "It was something I will always remember." The Skins' starting offense -- led by quarterback Robert Griffin III -- opened the game with an 11-play drive that resulted in a field goal. "We came out and did what we wanted to do," said Griffin. "Got the starters in and out and had an effective drive. We got some points and almost had a touchdown."

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #21
•Cardinals Recall Carlos Martinez From AAA Memphis: As first relayed by MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch, the Cardinals have recalled right-hander Carlos Martinez from Triple-A Memphis, optioning lefty reliever Kevin Siegrist in a corresponding 25-man roster move. Martinez will pitch out of the bullpen initially, but he was being utilized as a starter at Memphis — and threw 10 1/3 scoreless innings in his two-week stay there — so the 22-year-old could also be an option for the St. Louis rotation down the stretch.

Shelby Miller has struggled mightily in two straight outings and newcomer Justin Masterson has been blown up in two of his first three starts. Miller has already spent some time in the bullpen this season. Siegrist was one of the most dominant relievers in baseball in 2013 — posting a 0.45 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings — but he has struggled with forearm issues in 2014 and hasn’t been nearly as effective.

•Scioscia: Hamilton 'Not The Same': Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia expressed some frustration over struggling outfielder Josh Hamilton, despite beating the Texas Rangers on Saturday night. Hamilton, 33, starred for the Rangers before signing a free agent contract with the Angels prior to the 2013 season and his play has slipped since then. This season, Hamilton is batting .266 with just eight home runs, including .216 in the second half. He has batted .189 in 53 at-bats this month. He did miss some time earlier this season with a thumb injury.

"Josh is not the same that we saw when we were looking at the other dugout," Scioscia said. "He's not in the batter's box with the confidence we know he has. He's not attacking the ball like he can. He's working hard to try to find it ... but we need him to do what he's capable of doing, or close to that." Hamilton was 2-for-9 with seven strikeouts the first two games of this series against his former team. Hamilton signed a five-year, $125 million contract after his monster 2012 season with the Rangers in which he batted .285 with 43 homers and 128 RBIs. He won the American MVP award in 2010.

•Michael Wacha Throws Off Mound For First Time Since June: There are still quite a few hurdles to leap over, but Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha looks to be progressing toward a mid-to-late September return. According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Wacha threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium, mixing in four or five changeups to a mostly fastball-focused workout.

It was Wacha’s first time throwing off a mound since he was shut down in late June because of a stress reaction in his right shoulder. “It felt good to get back out there on the mound,” the 23-year-old told reporters. “Arm felt great. It was 30 pitches. Pretty light throws but I’m happy with it.” Wacha, a first-round pick in 2012, owns an outstanding 2.79 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 8.6 K/9 in 155 innings since making his major league debut in mid-2013. He won MVP honors in last year’s NLCS at the age of 22.

•Yankees C Brian McCann Returns From Concussion: The New York Yankees have activated catcher Brian McCann from the seven-day concussion list and optioned catcher Austin Romine to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The moves were made before Sunday's game at Tampa Bay. McCann was hurt during a game on Aug. 8 against Cleveland. Romine appeared in one game after being called up the next day. Also, right-hander Masahiro Tanaka felt fine and threw on level ground one day after throwing 25 pitches in his first bullpen session Saturday since going on the disabled list July 9 with a partial ligament tear in his right elbow. Tanaka, whom the Yankees hope can avoid surgery and return next month, will have another mound session in the next few days.

•David Ortiz Hits HRs 400, 401 In Red Sox Uniform, Ties Career High In RBI: David Ortiz's career with the Boston Red Sox has moved into elite territory. Ortiz hit a pair of two-run homers, including his 400th shot in a Red Sox uniform, and drove in a career high-tying six runs to power Boston past the Houston Astros 10-7 on Saturday night. Big Papi joined Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski as the only players to hit 400 homers while playing with the Red Sox. Ortiz did it with his drive into the first row of the center-field seats in the third inning. "It's an honor to be mentioned with those legends that were with the Red Sox," he said. "When you come to this organization to play, you're not expecting to be mentioned with those guys."

The left-handed slugger has joined a class that features two of the greatest players to wear a Boston uniform. "He's in rare company with those two other guys he's linked to," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. After his 400th, Ortiz hooked his other homer around the Pesky Pole in right field in the fifth. He has 459 home runs in his career, which started with Minnesota. He then lined a two-run double into the gap in front of the Green Monster in the eighth. He left to a standing ovation for a pinch runner, tipping his helmet as the crowd gave him a curtain call.

"David Ortiz is a Hall of Famer. He's about as good as it gets in this game," Astros manager Bo Porter said. Williams hit 521 homers, and Yaz had 452. Both spent their entire careers with the Red Sox. Chris Carter hit a solo homer and added a sacrifice fly for the Astros, who lost for the fifth time in seven games. A day earlier, Houston earned the franchise's first win in Fenway Park after going 0-8. The Red Sox trailed 6-3 before scoring four in the sixth. Ortiz's second homer off starter Brad Peacock sliced it to 6-5, and Daniel Nava's sacrifice fly tied it. Jackie Bradley Jr. had a sacrifice fly off Josh Fields (2-6) to push Boston ahead.

•Avisail Garcia Has 2 Hits In Return: Four months after surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Chicago White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia was activated from the disabled list Saturday and batted cleanup in the team's 6-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Garcia's reinstatement was the highlight of a bevy of roster moves the White Sox made Saturday. In order get Garcia off the 60-day disabled list and back on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated left-hander Charlie Leesman for assignment. The White Sox also placed right-handed reliever Javy Guerra on the bereavement list and put outfielder Moises Sierra on the 15-day DL. They recalled left-hander Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Charlotte. Surkamp allowed two hits in a scoreless inning.

Garcia was supposed to form the nucleus of a new-look White Sox offense with rookie first baseman Jose Abreu, but barely one week into the season, the July 2013 acquisition from the Detroit Tigers was injured while making a diving catch at Colorado. The right-handed Garcia hurt himself when his left elbow hit the ground, forcing the energy into his left shoulder and causing the injury. The original diagnosis was for Garcia to return for spring training in February, although the White Sox were fine with him playing in winter ball. That return date was later adjusted to September, and when Garcia continued to make progress in his rehab, it was moved up even further.

"I've been working hard doing everything right to come back this year," Garcia said before the game. "Everything is going well. I feel great. I'm playing tonight and I just thank God for everything." In 13 rehab games at Triple-A Charlotte, Garcia batted .340 with three doubles, a home run and three RBIs. In eight games with the White Sox this season, he was batting just .267, but had started to heat up with a two-homer game the day before he was injured. "It's nice," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I think one situation (Sierra's injury) kind of sped it up a little bit but it's nice to have him back. He's ready to go. I know he's excited and we're excited to have him back. It was a long road for him to go from where he was earlier in the year of getting hurt and all the work he's put in. We're glad it's today."

Although Garcia won't be prohibited from diving to make catches in the outfield, the White Sox have recommended that he go feet-first whenever possible. Other than that, he won't have any restrictions. "No, he's just ready to play," Ventura said. "That's part of when you're ready to activate him is that you have to let him just play. You don't want any restrictions on him. There is no idea of resting him or doing anything like that. He will get as much playing time as he can handle."

Football frenzy can chop block even the best baseball bettors
By MARC MELTZER

We’re hitting one of the most distracting times of the year for baseball bettors. It’s easy to become a little misguided right now, so it’s important to see the forest between the trees.

Football is the most profitable sport for both land-based and online casinos but that’s not much of a distraction for the baseball bettor. The distraction comes from the inundation of football into life from everywhere else.

If you’re a sports fan and a gambler like me, you follow a lot of sports website, writers, prognosticators and bettors on Twitter and Facebook. Some of these outlets are around throughout the year, betting and writing about whatever sport is happening at the time. However, many of these people go away when football is in the offseason. It's easy to forget that they exist.

Football brings bigger ratings for television outlets, more page views for websites and more picks sold by handicappers. Just like sportsbooks, these people all make a lot of money over the next six months. This is their time to shine. It’s also baseball bettors’ time to look the other way.

It’s easy for MLB fans and bettors to get caught up in statistics. That’s a major part of what makes baseball betting fun and profitable. The football guys are catching up to baseball statheads (call them sabermetricians if you want) and throwing out random, and often meaningless, statistics all day and night. The information may be fun and even useful, but this clutter can very easily get in the way of reading MLB information that you’ve found useful.

It may be time for other people to get ready for football but it’s time for baseball bettors to increase focus on the major leagues and stay the course of what has hopefully made this season successful.

This has been a profitable year in baseball for me and I don’t want any of these football clowns getting in the way of more profit. Sure, I want useful information for all sports that I bet, but I want it when I have time for it.

This has really been a breakout year (2013 into 2014) for sports media and I’ve had to adjust my ways of consuming it all. In a vacuum, there’s way too much sports information out there and that’s great. It can also be overwhelming. As much as the sports fan inside me enjoys reading about college and NFL football statistics and historical information, I don’t need that right now.

Baseball is my focus because that’s what’s paying me today. I’d much rather read 3,000 words on Brandon McCarthy’s current pitch regression or changes since he joined the Yankees than a similar-sized article about the San Diego Chargers’ ATS potential for next season. There’s a place for the Chargers information but that’s not my priority. Baseball is still my priority.

I’ve segmented my online life into different sports and different people so that I don’t get lost in the forest of sports information. I want to read about football but segmenting my information intake allows me to do that on my schedule - not anyone else's.

It’s easy to see a juicy headline and want to read the information. That’s how I end up in a “Sanchize” hole reading about how Mark Sanchez will be great with the Eagles. I don’t need that when there’s a baseball game I can research.

My time for sports betting is limited and I need to make sure I’m using it properly. For me, that’s focusing on the bets at hand.

I’m easily distracted so focusing my sports media on baseball is more important for the rest of the year than it’s been for the past few months where I could spend a little time just reading random news at a leisurely pace.

Leisure is gone, so focus must increase. Betting baseball is the best. Don’t let the football people that just came out of the cave get in the way of that.

Monday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers

Mariners at Phillies – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
SEA: Elias (9-9, 4.14 ERA)
PHI: Williams (2-5, 6.43 ERA)

Previous series recap: Seattle grabbed two of three at Detroit, capped off by Sunday’s 8-1 blowout as short underdogs. The Phillies return home following a dreadful 1-4 West Coast swing that ended with a 5-2 defeat at San Francisco on Sunday. Philadelphia’s lone victory on that trip came in extra innings at AT&T Park on Friday, as the Phillies have lost six of their last seven road contests.

What to watch for: The Phillies have struggled in interleague play this season, posting a 4-10 record, but Philadelphia pulled off a three-game sweep of Houston in its past IL series at home. The Mariners are making their first trip to Philadelphia since 2003, while the M’s took two of three from the Phillies in their previous series at Safeco Field in 2011.

Braves at Pirates – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
ATL: Santana (12-6, 3.66 ERA)
PIT: Worley (5-2, 2.51 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Braves rebounded from a horrific stretch to start this month by sweeping the AL West-leading Athletics at home. Atlanta won three consecutive games for the first time since late July when the Braves captured the final three contests against the Padres. The Pirates head home after getting swept at Washington, while dropping the final two games to the Nationals in walk-off fashion.

What to watch for: Pittsburgh owns a solid 15-5 record in home series openers this season, while the Pirates have won 13 of their past 17 games at PNC Park. The Braves have dropped five of Ervin Santana’s last six starts on the road, as Atlanta looks to snap an eight-game skid on the highway. The Pirates and Braves are meeting for the first time this season, as the home team won six of seven meetings in 2013.

Angels at Red Sox - 7:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
LAA: Wilson (9-8, 4.71 ERA)
BOS: Workman (1-6, 4.45 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Angels lost the series finale at Texas on Sunday, 3-2, as the Rangers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to snap a nine-game skid against Los Angeles. The Red Sox split a four-game home set with the Astros, as Boston fell behind 7-0 in Sunday’s 8-1 defeat as a -125 home favorite.

What to watch for: Los Angeles is riding an 8-2 run to the ‘under’ the last 10 games, while its past four contests have been decided by one run apiece. The Red Sox won two of three in Anaheim earlier this month with the lone loss coming in 19 innings. Boston is 4-1 in its past five in the home underdog role, while C.J. Wilson is winless in his last seven road starts for the Angels.

Orioles at White Sox – 8:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
BAL: Norris (10-7, 3.75 ERA)
CHW: Sale (10-2, 2.01 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Orioles avoided a sweep by knocking off the Indians as +120 underdogs on Sunday, 4-1, while limiting Cleveland to just two hits. The White Sox finished off a wild series with the Blue Jays by holding off Toronto, 7-5 on Sunday, as six of those runs came in the opening inning. Chicago took two of three meetings over the weekend, as the Sox are just 4-7 in their last 11 home contests.

What to watch for: Baltimore beat Chicago two of three times at Camden Yards in late June, which included a late rally against the Sox bullpen in the series opening 6-4 win by the O’s. Chicago owns a 9-3 record in Chris Sale’s 12 starts at U.S. Cellular Field this season, but he dropped his past home outing as a -225 favorite against Texas. The Orioles have cashed the ‘under’ in five consecutive road games, while Baltimore is 4-1 in Bud Norris’ past five away starts.

Reds at Cardinals – 8:15 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
CIN: Leake (9-11, 3.59 ERA)
STL: Masterson (6-7, 5.58 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Reds split a four-game set with the Rockies at Coors Field, which included Cincinnati squandering a four-run lead in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 10-9 defeat in the opener of a doubleheader. The Cardinals remain at home after grabbing three of four from the feisty Padres, capped off by a 7-6 victory on Sunday as -200 favorites.

What to watch for: St. Louis has compiled a 6-3 record against Cincinnati this season, which includes a 2-1 mark at Busch Stadium. The Reds are 2-5 in Mike Leake’s past seven trips to the mound, but the right-hander did toss eight scoreless innings in a 4-0 triumph at St. Louis in April as a +130 underdog. Since mid-June, the Cardinals have put together a 7-3 record in their past 10 home series openers, while posting an 8-3 mark in their last 11 home contests against division foes.

WNBA Betting Recap - 8/11-8/17
By Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (from Monday, Aug. 11 through Sunday, Aug. 17)

-- Favorites went 7-2 straight up
-- Favorites went 5-4 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 5-4 SU record
-- Road teams posted a 5-4 ATS record
-- The 'under' went 7-2

Team Betting Notes

-- The 'under' went 18-8 in the final two weeks of the WNBA regular season.

-- Phoenix (29-5) set a WNBA record with its 29th victory of the regular season in the finale in Seattle (12-22). The Mercury was on fire in the win-loss column, but they wrapped up the regular season just 2-7 ATS over their final nine.

-- The Mercury will meet Los Angeles (16-18) in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. LA won two of the final three games, with that only loss coming against Phoenix. The Sparks were 3-0 ATS in the final three, and the 'under' cashed in 12 of the final 17 games of the regular season.

-- Phoenix went 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in five regular season meetings against Los Angeles.

-- Minnesota (25-9) will likely give Phoenix its biggest run for the money, but they must get by San Antonio (16-18) first. The Lynx went 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS against the Stars this season, dropping the final meeting in San Antonio by a 92-76 score on Aug. 15.

-- Atlanta (19-15) held on for the top seed in the East, but they definitely tumbled down the stretch. The Dream won just four of their final 14 regular season games after a 15-5 start. They're face Chicago (15-19) in Round 1 of the playoffs.

-- The Sky went 7-5 SU in its final 12 games, and they were 6-5-1 ATS during the span. The constant was the 'under', which went 15-6 in the final 21 games.

-- In head-to-head meetings this season, the Sky went 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS against the Dream, winning and covering both meetings at home.

-- Indiana (16-18) and Washington (16-18) will meet in the first round, with the Fever as the two-seed. In a strange twist, the visitor won and covered in each of the four regular season meetings.

'Under-Whelming'

One team comes home and the other hits the road as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves meet in the first of a three-game series at PNC Park Monday night. Since 2010, the two teams have met 15 times in Pittsburgh, with the 'Under' being the right play thirteen times along with two 'Over'. Since the start of the season, the opener of a Braves road series means runs are at a premium. During this period, the Braves have platted just 2.95 runs/game while allowing 3.7 per/contest recording 12 'Under', 6 'Over', 1 Push. For those reasons and knowing Braves pitcher Ervin Santana is 3-1 'Under' last four allowing just 2.7 runs/game, Pirates Vance Worley is 3-1 'Under' opening a series allowing 2.2 runs/game the 'Under' is the choice in this one.

NEWSLETTER NFL Preseason Prediction From Doc’s Sports

Take #432 Washington (-3) over Cleveland (8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18)
The Johnny Football Saga will be in full effect on Monday with a national TV audience and an expected start by the chosen one. Washington also has their own drama as people will find out this year in Robert Griffin III can actually play quarterback in the league. Detroit did not do much but the basics and still beat the Browns in Week 1 and expect Washington to attack more especially on offense. Cleveland has not been a good team in the regular season so there is nothing to suggest they can win road games in the exhibition season.

Can'tPickAWinner
08-18-2014, 10:30 AM
Game of the Day: Browns at Redskins

Cleveland Browns at Washington Redskins (-2.5, 41.5)

Robert Griffin III will get his first chance to unleash his new offensive approach Monday night as the Washington Redskins entertain the Cleveland Browns in the final game of the second week of the NFL’s exhibition schedule. Griffin and the rest of the first-team offense operated a run-heavy strategy in the opener against New England, attempting just four passes. It didn’t matter, as the Redskins led from start to finish en route to a 23-6 triumph.

Quarterbacking is also the main focus in the Browns’ camp, where the battle for the Week 1 starting role rages on between current favorite Brian Hoyer and popular rookie Johnny Manziel. Hoyer will start Monday’s showdown against the Redskins and will likely play most or all of the first half, while Manziel will take the helm for the majority of the second half. Manziel outperformed Hoyer in Cleveland’s 13-12 loss to Detroit last weekend.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The line opened at Washington -3 but has since fallen a half-point. The O/U has risen by one point to 41 1/2.

INJURY REPORT: Cleveland: CB Buster Skrine (thumb) is out; DE Desmond Bryant (wrist) is questionable. Washington: DE Jason Hatcher (knee), ILB Darryl Sharpton (ankle) and RB Chris Thompson (ankle) are out; SS Brandon Meriweather (toe) is questionable.

ABOUT THE BROWNS (0-1): Hoyer has been generating plenty of attention so far in the preseason – much of it negative – but the veteran signal-caller isn’t bothered by suggestions he may wind up either as the No. 2 quarterback or as a member of another team. “It doesn’t matter,” he told reporters last week. “What matters is what coach Mike Pettine thinks and what (offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan) thinks.” Hoyer will need a strong showing against the Redskins, with Pettine expected to name his Week 1 starter Tuesday.

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (1-0): It’s a brand new day for Griffin and the Redskins’ offense, which will look decidedly different under new head coach Jay Gruden. For starters, Griffin will be encouraged to call audibles depending on how opposing defenses are set up – something former offensive coordinator Shanahan avoided. “It’s a quarterback’s dream,” Griffin said. “You want to have some control at the line of scrimmage to get out of some things and protect yourself with different protections.”

TRENDS:

* Washington racked up 430 total yards in its exhibition opener; Cleveland had just 291.
* The Redskins are 11-2 in their last 13 preseason games.
* The Browns have allowed more than 20 points just once in their last five exhibition contests.

CONSENSUS: 61.84 percent of wagers are backing the host Redskins.

Who's Not Hot - AL
By Mike Rose
VegasInsider

The plot continues to thicken as we race towards the playoffs in MLB betting action. However, there are some teams that are lagging behind in the American League, all of which were in the playoffs last season.

The three teams haven't changed at the bottom of the AL, but have they gotten any closer?

Take a look and see here at VegasInsider.com

Texas Rangers (48-76, -$2,972) – In a word for Texas? No. Things aren't getting any better, and they aren't going to get any better. Forget about all of the injuries. Even the men who are playing are playing lousy ball. SS Elvis Andrus, a man who could be counted upon for a .300 average every season, is batting just .272 with 61 runs scored. OF Shin-Soo Choo, a man who figured to kill the ball in the hot air of Arlington, has just 12 homers for the season and is batting .241, and he has struck out 127 times already in 439 at bats. RHP Yu Darvish has been battling injuries, but he is only 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA, numbers which just aren't what we are used to seeing. Manager Ron Washington very well could pay the price for as bad as this year has been.

Boston Red Sox (56-67, -$2,158) – Did you really expect things to get better for the Red Sox after they traded away all of their pitchers? The last time we addressed who was cold in the American League, Boston featured a rotation with Jon Lester, John Lackey, Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront, and Jake Peavy. Now, the rotation features Rubby De La Rosa, Brandon Workman, Joe Kelly, Allen Webster, and Buchholz. Yikes. The Red Sox underwent a 10-hour period like no team we have ever seen in the bigs with all of the trades that they made to various contending teams, and though we believe that they are setup well for 2015, the rest of this year is probably going to be a disaster without any legitimate starting pitching.

Tampa Bay Rays (61-63, -$1,668) – We give the Rays all sorts of credit. They sold their biggest asset at the trade deadline in LHP David Price, and at least in the immediate, they basically only got back LHP Drew Smyly. Don't get us wrong. We're big time Smyly believers. But he's not David Price. That said, Tampa Bay managed to become the first team in baseball history to improve from 18-games under .500 to get back to the .500 mark at 61-61. That said, two straight losses feel like they have taken the air out of this team just a bit. If the Rays can figure this out and get into the playoffs this year in spite of the bad start to the season and in spite of the fact that they traded away Price, both GM Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon should be enshrined into the Hall of Fame right now. Of the three teams on this list, Tampa Bay is the one with the best shot of getting off of it by the end of the year, but the team is still over nine units away from the closest team, the Detroit Tigers (-$747).

20* AL Non-Divisional KNOCKOUT on Los Angeles Angels -121

The Los Angeles Angels have climbed into first place in the AL West division thanks to a recent skid by the Oakland A's. They have now the best record in baseball and have gone a bit under the radar this season with what the A's had been doing until recently.

C.J. Wilson clearly hasn't had his best season, but he is the better starter in tonight's matchup. The left-hander has gone 9-8 with a 4.71 ERA over 22 starts this year. Wilson has owned Boston, going 5-2 with a 2.73 ERA in nine career starts. His teams are 7-2 in those nine games.

Brandon Workman wouldn't start on most teams in the big leagues. He has gone 1-6 with a 4.45 ERA over 10 starts and four relief appearances for the Red Sox. He has been at his worst at home, going 0-3 with a 4.94 ERA and 1.464 WHIP in five starts.< br />
Wilson is 8-0 (+8.4 Units) against the money line in road games vs. teams whose hitters strike out seven or more times/game in the second half of the season over the last two seasons. Los Angeles is 34-12 (+18.8 Units) against the money line after allowing four runs or less four straight games over the last three seasons.

The Angels are 51-18 in their last 69 vs. a team with a losing record. Los Angeles is 8-2 in Wilson's last 10 starts during game 1 of a series. The Red Sox are 6-14 in their last 20 games vs. a left-handed starter. Boston is 0-6 in Workman's last six starts overall. Bet the Angels Monday.

[913] Baltimore Orioles[914] Chicago White Sox
Baltimore Orioles +137
at BMaker

3* White Sox/Orioles AL Main Event on Orioles +
The Orioles are showing outstanding value as a large road dog against the White Sox on Monday. Baltimore was about to avoid getting swept by the Indians with a 4-1 win on Sunday and have done a nice job of stringing together at least a couple wins after a loss. Chicago will be starting their ace Chris Sale, but he's not looked like an ace in his two career starts against the Orioles. Chicago has lost both of his starts and Sale has an ugly 5.40 ERA and 2.100 WHIP.
Adding to this is the fact that the Orioles are 4-1 in their last 5 against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15 and a perfect 5-0 in their last 4 road games against a left-handed starter. It's also worth mentioning that Baltimore is a dominant 8-1 in their last 9 games during game 1 of a series and 6-1 in their last 7 against a team with a losing record. These trends combine to form a Sizzling 88% (23-3) system in favor of the Orioles. Take Baltimore!

in Detroit. The Redskins meanwhile opened with an impressive win here at
home in Maryland over the New England Patriots 23-6, losing their shutout bid
with just 1:23 remaining.

The battle between Manziel and veteran Brain Hoyer for the starting
quarterback job is reportedly now a toss-up, so the Browns hope to give both signal
callers roughly the same amount of snaps with the rest of the starters in
this contest. Hoyer will get the actual start and is expected to play the
whole first quarter, while Manziel is expected to play the entire second
quarter. Johnny Football performed admirably while playing with the second unit
last week completing 7-of-11 passes for 63 yards, and he also ran the ball six
times for 27 yards including a nice 16-yard scamper. Hoyer started last
week and completed just 6-of-14 with the first team, although he did throw for
92 yards. Besides this highly publicized quarterback battle, the starting
running back job is also yet to be determined with rookie Terrence West
pushing Ben Tate, who most believed would simply inherit the starting job when
Cleveland signed him away from the Houston Texans where he usually played in
Arian Forster's shadow. Those positional battles at two offensive skill
positions should result in an improved offensive showing by the Browns overall
after not scoring a touchdown last week, especially with the starting offensive
line and wide receivers playing at least one half and quite possibly a few
series to start the second half. And remember that those starters include
one of the best receivers in football in Josh Gordon, who can still play in
preseason while awaiting his appeal of a season-long suspension.

The Redskins only plan to play Griffin for one quarter, so logic would
dictate the same can be expected for the rest of the starting lineup, which
could give the Browns a nice advantage from the second quarter on in this game.
The Redskins are also in the process of learning a new offensive scheme
under rookie head coach Jay Gruden, and remember that the Browns defended the
Cincinnati Bengals well in recent years when Gruden served as Cincinnati's
offensive coordinator. The Skins are trying to turn Griffin into more of a
pocket passer, and he was not all that great last week completing just 2-of-4
passes for nine yards without a single rushing attempt. While the attempt to
protect the knee that RG3 tore up two years ago is understandable, is it
really wise to totally takes away one of his major strengths (running ability)
and has that made Griffin less aggressive? It does not help that Cleveland
has a talented defense that boasts the likes of pro bowl cornerback Joe Haden
and linebacker Karlos Dansby.

The Browns are small underdogs here, and remember that entering this
weekend, preseason Week 2 underdogs coming off a straight up loss were an amazing
72-33-2, 68.6 percent ATS since 2000.

We are not in the business of playing big favorites (especially on the road), but we are going to break that rule here as we back the Royals playing the Twins here tonight. Instead of eating the big price, we are going to roll a smaller play on the run line in this situation. The Royals will give the ball to lefty Jason Vargas (9-5, 3.27) to be opposed by Trevor May from the Twins, who made his major league debut last week and was hit hard by the Oakland A's. As we have told you before, the Royals are feasting on losing teams this season, evidenced by the fact they are 7-1 in their last eight games in that spot. Keep this in mind...the Twins have really struggled against left-handed starters this season and are just 1-6 in their last seven home games vs. a lefty. We see the Royals staying red hot and getting another solid effort from Vargas, while May continues to struggle under the bright lights! The Sharps say...

Game: Cleveland Browns @ Washington Redskins
Time: Monday 08/18 8:00 PM Eastern
Pick: Cleveland +2.5 (+105) at 5Dimes

A pair of first-year head coaches meet in this one, and new coaches want to look good in front of the home fans. That's what Washington did last week in blasting the Patriots, so there is less to show this week. They face a deep and talented Cleveland defense, and the Browns have a new head coach in Mike Pettine who also has plenty to prove. There is tremendous competition in the Browns camp regarding the starting QB job between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. Manziel tightened the race with his impressive showing in Detroit. The Cleveland start is crucial because it's presumably the last game before Pettine names his starter for the opener Sept. 7 in Pittsburgh. He said this week that he'd still like to name his man by the third preseason game Aug. 23. Pettine indicated that a continuation of the Detroit game, where Manziel ran and threw well, barked out the plays, and got the right men in motion, will go a long way toward getting the nod on Aug. 18. The Browns defense was brilliant last week, holding the high-flying Lions to 219 passing yards and forcing two turnovers, so grab the dog. Take the Browns in this one.

LAS VEGAS -- Since it's so late in the season, maybe it's okay to say this past weekend of baseball offered the year's most astonishing array of series, four of which featured clashes between potential playoff teams. It was sort of a judgment day, and what we witnessed will give us lots to think about over the next six weeks as we start talking about playoff matchups and who has a great chance at winning the World Series.

Take the Brewers – a team with question marks in the starting rotation – going into L.A. and sweeping the Dodgers, beating Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in the first two games and completing the deal Sunday vs. Dan Haren. Milwaukee has beaten the Dodgers five out of six games this season. If these two meet in October, this rout will surely be on L.A.’s minds, while the Brewers beam with confidence, knowing they can take down the dynamic duo.

The Braves had been struggling, losing 12 of their last 15 games before their weekend series against Oakland, but promptly swept the A’s. Closer Craig Kimbrel showed his value in back-to-back 4-3 wins on Saturday and Sunday. Just when we thought we were saying goodbye to the Braves, they play to their strengths and come up huge to put themselves right back in the wild-card chase.

The A’s, who were 10-2 in interleague play before facing Atlanta, continue to struggle. Oakland is now on a season-high five-game losing streak, just 7-10 in August and a percentage point behind the Angels for the AL West lead.

The Nationals continue to roll, as they’ve won six straight and nine of 11 after sweeping three from the reeling Pirates. The Nats maintained their six-game lead over the Braves in the NL East, while the Pirates’ five-game losing streak is their longest since 2012 and has dropped them 1.5-games behind the final NL wild-card position.

The Tigers lost two of three at home to the Mariners and have now dropped eight of their last 12; they are now a half-game behind Seattle for the final AL wild-card spot. The Mariners have won 11 of 15 games in August, as the offense has exploded by averaging five runs a game, with Robinson Cano (.332, 68 RBI) proving his worthiness as an AL MVP candidate.

Key series beginning Monday

The Braves and Pirates -- two teams battling for the final NL wild-card spot, each 1.5 games back -- meet in Pittsburgh for a three-game set. The Braves are rolling with confidence, while the Pirates can’t wait for Andrew McCutchen to return. The good news for Pittsburgh is that home is where the heart is – their 39-26 home record is the best in the NL. The Pirates are -135 favorites to win the series, and Game 1 features Vance Worley as a short favorite over Ervin Santana

There are also several very good teams that can keep their rolls going against lesser opponents: the Angels (-160 to wins series) play at Fenway Park; Seattle (-135) visits Philadelphia; Baltimore (-110) is at the White Sox; and Cincinnati visits St. Louis (-170) in what is always an entertaining NL Central battle.

Monday’s selections:

Pirates (Worley) -112 vs. Braves, 7:05 p.m. ET

Mariners/Phillies OVER 8.5 (-115), 7:05 p.m. ET

Angels/Red Sox OVER 9 (-120), 7:10 p.m. ET

The Royals are now 13-3 in the month of August and coming off a clean 12-6 victory yesterday vs these lowly Twins. Now today Jason Vargas will take the mound for the Royals, coming off a complete game three hit shutout against the A’s in his latest outing. His season numbers are impressive with a WHIP of 1.23, ERA of 3.27 and record of 9-5. In 3 starts against the Twins, Vargas has pitched 7 innings every time, twice pitching shutouts and once allowing two earned runs for a 0.86 ERA. Vargas is also a beast On the road better this season with a 2.13 ERA across ten starts away from home. Starting for the Twins on Monday night will be 24 year old rookie right-hander Trevor May who over just 4.1 innings of work on the road against the Astros and A’s, May has racked up a bloated WHIP of 3.46 and ERA of 12.46. This looks like a great opportunity for the Royals here tonight.

REDS @ CARDINALS – OVER 7.5 -110 *2*

The Reds have went over in 4 of their last 5 and have averaged 4.8 runs scored over those 5 games. The Cards offense has been hot too averaging 5 runs a game their last 5 games. Both these teams offenses lately justify a total of at least 8. While Leake has been average this year, Masterson has been bad and the Reds should have no problem putting up some runs. He has given up at least 5 earned runs in 5 of his last 8 starts.

Amount: 2 Units (Regular-sized bet)

Only two things kept me from making a 3-Unit Max Bet on this play. One is the Pirates’ current five-game losing streak. I almost never bet against a streak like this. But I feel my work on this game is strong enough to warrant a normal-sized wager. Secondly, I’d like to see Pittsburgh’s bullpen in better current form. But the last five games have been on the road & I’m expecting a better effort from them at PNC Park tonight.

Now, as for why I made this bet:

Atlanta has lost their last EIGHT road games
Since the start of last season, Atlanta is 0-6 (-3.33 rpg) in their first road game following a 9+ game home standThis season, the Braves are 1-9 (-3.1 rpg) on the road against a righty whose WHIP is lower than 1.15 on the seasonSince April 20th, Ervin Santana owns a team record of 0-6 (-3 rpg) at -120 or less on the road following a Quality Start in his last outing
Since May 6th, Pittsburgh is 11-4 at home against a righty whose WHIP is 1.25 or less on the seasonVance Worley owns a team record of 6-1 this season if he struck out less than six hitters in his last start.

CLEVELAND BROWNS +2.5

This is a big year for RG3. Last season was a total bust and sometimes players that run his style never return to what they once were after an injury. This team is obviously going to be very careful with him in the preseason and both their top receivers are dinged up heading into the season. How would you as the Browns like to have Rex Grossman as a 3rd string QB. He might not be a quality NFL Starter, but as a backup in the final quarters its like having Manning on the field. Take the Browns.

Browns vs. Redskins Free Pick

WASHINGTON, D.C. (ATS Consultants) – NFL fans will get another opportunity to watch Johnny Manziel in live action tonight when the Redskins host the Browns at 8:00PM ET.
View NFL Preseason Odds

Mike Pettine says that he’ll name his Week 1 starting quarterback on Tuesday, which means tonight is the last chance that Manziel and Brian Hoyer will get to impress their head coach. Pettine said that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains and general manager Ray Farmer will all have say in naming the quarterback, while owner Jimmy Haslam presumably will have his voice heard as well.
Manziel was solid in his NFL debut last week, completing 7-of-11 passes for 63 yards and also leading the Browns in rushing while adding 27 yards on six carries. Of course, Hoyer did nothing to lose his grip on the starting gig after completing 6-of-14 passes for 92 yards and no turnovers. Hoyer might not give the Browns an added runner under center but he’s been solid as a passer in camp and did go 3-0 as the starter last year before injuring his knee.
On the other side the Redskins will look to build off of their impressive 23-6 win over the Patriots in their preseason opener. Robert Griffin III only attempted four passes, completing two of them for 9 yards while Kirk Cousins was 9-of-13 for 103 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Lache Seastrunk also rushed 12 times for 63 yards while starter Alfred Morris added 27 yards on five carries.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Redskins are a 2.5-point favorite over the Browns tonight while the over/under is currently sitting at 41.5 points. Even though the under hit in both of their preseason openers, we like the over 41.5 between the Browns and Redskins tonight.

Seattle @ PHILADELPHIA

Seattle -1½ +114 over PHILADELPHIA

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.28)

The Mariners have won 10 of 12. They‘ve also won six of their past seven with only loss over that span occurring against David Price. Roenis Elias has been pitching in the shadows of King Felix and Hisashi Iwakuma this entire year. His 4.14 ERA is one explanation for it. Digging deeper, his mediocre surface stats largely are the result of the 6.27 ERA and 1.71 WHIP he posted in July. Those marks were driven by an unfriendly 41% hit rate and 63% strand rate. However, Elias actually had an impressive 11.1 K’s/9 in July and the strikeouts have kept coming in August with 10 K’s/9, not to mention a 52% groundball rate and an elite 16% swing and miss rate. In fact, his swinging strike rate over the last month is the highest of any starter in MLB. Pitching for the red-hot Mariners against a Phillies team that has never seen him before, Elias is an unheralded young arm worth backing here.

Philadelphia has dropped five of six and they return home here after five games on the West Coast against the Angels and Giants. Jerome Williams is not a familiar name but this stiff has been around for quite some time. He’s 35-years-old and has pitched 840 innings at this level since he broke in with the Giants back in 2003. The Phillies are Williams’ third team this season. He was let go by both Houston and Texas. Over the past two seasons including this year, his dominant start/disaster start split shows that he's not succeeding as a starter and the splits back that up. As a starter Williams threw 139 innings since the start of last year and has posted a 5.06 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP. He posted similar results in 2012. His hr/f remains stubbornly high and this venue isn’t likely to change that. The odds of a step forward at this age are minimal but the odds of cashing in against him are not.

Atlanta @ PITTSBURGH

Atlanta +102 over PITTSBURGH

These two have identical records at 64-60 but if momentum and/or current form mean anything, one has to give the edge to the Braves. After struggling miserably over a two-week span that saw them lose 11 of 13 games, the Braves got off the mattress with a three-game sweep over the A’s this past weekend while outscoring them 15-8. The Braves defeated both Sonny Gray and Jon Lester the past two games and take a huge step down here against Vance Worley. Since being called up on June 21 to face the Cubbies, Worley has posted a 2.51 ERA over 10 starts. This a guy who spent the first three months of the year in the minors and that has bounced back and forth in the minors the past few seasons. In 14 starts in the minors over the past two seasons, Worley’s ERA was 4.02. For the Twins last year at the ML level, Worley was 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA in 10 starts in which he allowed 82 hits in 48.2 innings. The question now is how much of this newfound success can he actually sustain? Looking under his surface stats reveals that Worley is the exact same pitcher now as he’s always been with the difference being nothing but pure luck. A 25% line-drive rate matches his previous MLB LD rate. In other words, those hard hit balls are being hit right at people. He’s actually striking out fewer batters now than he was previously with just 43 in 68 innings. Worley’s 4% swing and miss rate to go along with his unsustainable 89% strand rate tells the story of a pitcher whose surface stats are a complete mirage and who is at the mercy of his defense and strand rate. We’re selling high on Vance Worley’s low ERA.

The Pirates have lost five in a row at this crucial time and they have their two biggest series of the year on deck against Milwaukee and St. Louis. Facing Earvin Santana is no picnic either. Santana has a BB/K split of 14/41 over his past six starts covering 40 innings. He now has 137 K’s in 150 innings and his elite swinging strike rate of 13% confirms he’s been dazzling almost the entire season. Santana’s xERA of 3.31 fully supports what he has accomplished this year making him and the Braves a great value play against that imposter Worley and the reeling Pirates.

Making a small play here. First of all, the Redskins weapons are getting heathly and coming back. RGIII should play enough to lead them down the field and score, and he's got a FEW big play weapons. And opposite, Browns are having a QB controversy, so it will be critical that BOTH QBs lead scoring drives down the field. The # is moving up, and some books have moved to 21.5 now. For this small play, that's okay with me (shop around if you can as 21 is a key #). Just too many ways this one gets over, and then we don't have to stress and OVER happening with a garbage TD late in the game. Just tryting to take the variables out, as much as possible.

The Reds dropped three games of a four-game set with the Rockies at Coors Field over the weekend which included Cincinnati blowing a four-run lead in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 10-9 loss in the opener of a doubleheader. Meanwhile the Cardinals continue their severn game home-stand coming off a 7-6 victory on Sunday over the Padres.

The Reds hand the baseball to righty Mike Leake tonight as he looks to bounce back after allowing 5 ER and 8 hits in just 5 IP last Wednesday against Boston. Leake is 5-5 in 13 road starts this season with a 3.66 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Opponents have hit .274 off Leake in those 13 road outings. In 11 career starts against the Cardinals, leake is 3-5 with a 4.85 ERA. Matt Holliday and Matt Adams are a combined 15-for-40 with 2 HR and 8 RBIs against Leake.

Opposing Leake will be recently acquired Justin Masterson, Masterson is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts for the Cardinals and has struggled with his command all season long. He sports a 9-11 record with a 5.58 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 22 starts in 2014. Masterson has given up at least 5 ER in 5 of his last 8 starts whilst issuing a staggering 23 walks in those 8 trips to the mound. The big righty has been rocked by left handed hitters this season to the sound of a .319 BAA and 1.83 WHIP.

It is fair to say that the Reds will be slightly bleary-eyed after not arriving at their hotel rooms in St. Louis until the early hours of Monday morning. I like the value on the OVER in this game, I foresee both teams being able to put up enough runs to end this game north of the 7.5 which the books are giving us.

8 p.m. ET

The hype around Johnny Manziel allows us to get one of the best pre-season bets at home at less then a field goal! Washington is 8-2 ATS as a home favorite their last 10 pre-season games. New Redshins Head Coach Jay Gruden was extremely conservative in game one of the pre-season allowing RG III to throw the ball just 3 times but will give his QB plenty of snaps tonight and have a much more aggressive offensive approach against Cleveland. Browns QB battle between Manziel and Brian Hoyer has gotten all the ink but Washington is a much deeper team and that will be the difference as the Skins will be able to maintain the lead even after RG III heads to the sidelines. Take the Redskins.

Pick: Cleveland Browns+2.5 (+105)

A pair of first-year head coaches meet in this one, and new coaches want to look good in front of the home fans. That’s what Washington did last week in blasting the Patriots, so there is less to show this week. The Cleveland start is crucial because it’s presumably the last game before Pettine names his starter for the opener Sept. 7 in Pittsburgh. He said this week that he’d still like to name his man by the third preseason game Aug.
