1998 World Cup winners France are favorites to beat Nigeria and progress to the Quarter-finals.

The French looked explosive in their opening two games – beating Honduras 3-0 and Switzerland 5-2 – before drawing 0-0 with Ecuador to top the group.

Perhaps most importantly manager Didier Deschamps’ squad look happy and well-balanced which France have not had for many years – in 2010 Nikolas Anelka was sent home in the aftermath of a fallout between players and coaching staff.

Despite conceding just two goals there are still doubts defensively, while Karim Benzema has been excellent so far, scoring three times – with another ruled as an own-goal and one more coming just after the final whistle against Switzerland.

Nigeria in comparison qualified behind Argentina after drawing 0-0 with Iran, beating Bosnia and losing 3-2 against the group winners.

As they showed against Argentina, Nigeria are dangerous on the break with the strength of Emmanuel Emenike and the ruthlessness of Ahmed Musa.

On the 1X2 market France are the big 1.529 favorites – which according to the odds gives them a 65.40% chance of winning. On the handicap both teams have covered in two out of three games, and the line is set at 1 goal in favor of France.

Nigeria has its work cut out Monday
Andrew Avery

Despite going tit-for-tat with Argentina in its final group stage game, Nigeria never really looked like they were going to win against Messi and Co.. Monday could prove to be an even tougher challenge as the Screaming Eagles face France, which has been one of the top teams in the World Cup.

France scored eight goals and conceded just two in the group stage, but dominated various statistical categories in the process. Les Bleus lead the World Cup in shots per game with 21 and have dominated aerial duels, winning 65.5 percent of the time, also the best mark in Brazil.

Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com/) Sports currently lists the French as -214 faves in their first knockout round matchup, with Nigeria +725 and the Draw +359.

Monday's World Cup Tips
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

France vs. Nigeria (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Both last 16 matches on Monday see a European team, as heavy favourite, play against one of the two African teams left in the World Cup. A double on France and Germany to win in normal time against beat Nigeria and Algeria respectively pays out at just 1.76/1. Will there be an upset, or will the favourites progress?

First up, France face Nigeria at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia. France have been one of the teams of the tournament so far. They scored eight goals in three games in winning Group E, and look a team to be feared. Having been available at around 25/1 to win the World Cup before the tournament started, well done to those who backed Les Bleus at those prices. They look a force to be reckoned with.

Nigeria qualified largely thanks to one good performance. Their 1-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, where admittedly they deserved victory, came between a dour 0-0 against Iran and a 3-2 defeat to Argentina, and there was little to suggest from their group stage performances that the Super Eagles would go far in Brazil. They are arguably the least impressive team in the last 16.

France are the 2/5 favourites with sportsbook.ag, with Nigeria out at 27/4. A draw is 15/4. These prices seem about right, and there is little room for manoeuvre. I just can’t see Nigeria troubling France here. Their defence is decent without having enough to frustrate the best, while their attack is weakened by the midfield trio’s inability to create. In the ‘To Qualify’ market, you can get France at 5/25, while Stephen Keshi’s Nigeria are 19/5.

Bookies are expecting goals, but only one of the four last 16 matches so far have produced over 2.5 goals. Under 2.5 goals looks appealing at 1/1. Nigeria will find it difficult to break through the French backline, and they will have few chances to do so anyway. If France go ahead early, it is easy to imagine them playing it cautious, conserving energy for the next round. The heat will be strong in Brasilia, and Didier Deschamps will be anxious that his side to not push themselves too hard ahead of a potential quarter-final against Germany.

Top Bet: Under 2.5 goals at 1/1

Germany vs. Algeria (ESPN, 4:00 p.m. ET)

Germany meet Algeria at the Estadio Beira-Rio, in Porto Alegre. After three games in high humidity, it will be the first time Germany play in moderate temperatures, and they are heavy favourites to go through. They topped Group G, but were only genuinely impressive once, in a 4-0 win over Portugal, who had 10 men for most of the match.

Algeria were favourites to finish bottom of Group H, but showed their quality with three impressive results: they were unlucky to lose 2-1 to Belgium in their opening game, before thrashing South Korea 4-2 in their second tie. They secured the draw they needed against Russia, and Vahid Halihodzic’s side are worthy of their place in the last 16. After adding little to World Cup 2010 (they didn’t even score in the three matches they played), they have shown that their squad is full of quality in Brazil, and they will be a force in years to come.

Germany are, of course, heavy favourites. They are 13/50 to win the match in normal time, but given the fact that their first team is so uncertain, this cannot be recommended. A draw is 5/1, with a shock Algeria win, which would make them the first Arab nation to make the quarter-finals of the World Cup, is at 10/1. In the ‘To Qualify’ market, which may be of more appeal to punters, Germany are as short as 1/8, with Les Fennecs (the Desert Foxes) at a much more appealing 23/4.

Germany’s three matches so far have all been played in tough, ultra-humid conditions. No matter how good their preparation has been, this will have taken something out of them. Joachim Löw declined to rotate too much for their essentially dead game against USA, and this may come back to haunt him.

Algeria, meanwhile, have been in peak physical condition, and their relentless hard work in their game against Russia proved how fit these players are. In Sofiane Feghouli and Yacine Brahimi they have two fine playmakers, while Islam Slimani is a good all-round centre-forward. They are surely worth a bet in the handicap market. Algeria +1.5 is a 1/1 shot, and this looks good value to me.

Top Bet: Algeria +1.5 at 1/1

Nigeria tries to upset France on Monday
By: Brian Graham - StatFox

2014 WORLD CUP SOCCER

FRANCE vs. NIGERIA

Kickoff: Monday, 12:00 p.m. EDT
Nacional – Brasilia, Brazil

Line:
France -277, Nigeria +700, Tie after Regulation +375
Over/Under: 2.5 Goals (Over -140, Under +110)

France looks to continue its impressive World Cup run when it opens up the knockout stage versus Nigeria on Monday.

France had little problem with Honduras to begin their World Cup quest, winning easily by a 3-0 score, and followed that up with a 5-2 pummeling of Switzerland. Although Les Blues failed to score versus Ecuador, that 0-0 draw was good enough to give them enough points to win Group E. Nigeria did not allow a goal in its first two World Cup contests, drawing 0-0 with Iran before prevailing 1-0 over Bosnia-Herzegovina to end a 16-year win drought at the World Cup that had spanned nine straight winless matches. Nigeria then played very well against heavily-favored Argentina in a virtual home match near their country's border in Porto Alegre, with the Super Eagles falling 3-2 in an entertaining, back-and-forth affair. The one bit of troubling news to Nigeria fans is the inter-squad drama going on with the players skipping practice last week in protest about their bonuses. This matter has still not been resolved.

France star forward Karim Benzema has three of his team's eight goals so far in the World Cup, with one goal apiece for forwards Olivier Giroud and Moussa Sissoko, and midfielders Blaise Matuidi and Mathieu Valbuena. Other stars for Les Blues in this tournament include midfielders Paul Pogba and Yohan Cabaye, and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who has recorded shutouts in two of the three matches. Although France throttled Switzerland with five goals, they did allow two goals after the 80th minute of that game and got out-possessed 57% to 43%. However, Les Blues buckled down on defense in their most recent match by holding the ball for 60% of the scoreless draw versus Ecuador and reached 20 total shots for the second straight match, putting 13 of those on net. That gives the club a whopping 62 shots for the tournament, with 39 of those on net. After France committed 29 fouls and four yellow cards during their two wins, they committed only six fouls against Ecuador with zero yellow cards.

The Super Eagles were able to get a pair of goals from Ahmed Musa in their loss to Argentina, which saw them get outshot 18-12, including 13-7 for shots on goal. Nigeria had the ball for just 43% of the time. Although goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama surrendered three goals in the most recent match, he also made 10 saves, giving him 20 saves in the three World Cup contests. Nigeria trimmed its fouls from 16 versus Iran to nine against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but the Super Eagles committed 17 fouls against Argentina with defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Juwon Oshaniwa both booked for yellow cards. To pull off the huge upset, the Super Eagles know that star forward Emmanuel Emenike, who netted 15 goals in 32 games at the club level this season, will likely have to find the back of the net. But Nigeria has plenty of speedy attackers, such as Musa and Peter Odemwingie that could put France in an early hole.

World Cup Game of the Day: France vs. Nigeria

France vs. Nigeria (-200, +650, Draw +340)

With the temperatures soaring and the games becoming even more important, a little rest could go a long way for France as it prepares to face Nigeria in second round action Monday at the World Cup. The French coasted to back-to-back wins in group stage play, allowing coach Didier Deschamps to rest several regulars in a 0-0 tie with Ecuador. Nigeria is in tough after winning just one of three group stage games, and comes in off a 3-2 loss to Argentina.

The French have traditionally been a tough out whenever they've advanced past the initial group stage, reaching the semifinals five straight times in those situations. They're heavily favored against a Nigerian side that squeaked through Group F and will be without talented midfielder Michel Babatunde. "The team is young, but it's growing fast and learning quickly," Nigerian captain Joseph Yobo told fifa.com. "I don't see what we should be afraid of."

TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN

WORLD RANKINGS: France: No. 17; Nigeria: No. 44.

INJURY REPORT: France: D Mamadou Sakho is dealing with a hamstring injury and is considered doubtful. Nigeria: MF Michel Babatunde is out following a broken arm suffered when he was hit with a shot against Argentina; MF Victor Moses is dealing with a muscular problem and his status is in doubt.

WHAT THE SHARPS SAY: "A much revived French side comes into this second round match with high hopes of reaching the Quarter Finals. Nigeria's dismal record of only winning one of their last 11 World Cup games is surely in the players minds and It will be interesting to see how both teams approach this one." Covers Expert Footy Tipster.

ABOUT FRANCE: The French are looking at changes to their lineup despite outscoring opponents 8-2 in group play. with Sakho not expected to play, one of either Laurent Koscielny or Raphael Varane will assume the starting center-back role for Deschamps' team. The changes extend to the team's core offensive options, with Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann making a serious challenge to Karim Benzema's starting spot and Moussa Sissoko in the running to start in place of Paul Pogba.

ABOUT NIGERIA: The loss to Argentina was a difficult one to digest, but did feature at least one encouraging moment provided by Ahmed Musa. The Spartak Moscow forward had a sensational goal in the match at Porto Allegre after failing to impress in his team's opening two games. Team manager Stephen Keshi believes his team is in the right frame of mind, telling reporters: "Whether we are playing Spain at the FIFA Confederations Cup or playing against Liberia in a friendly match, I always tell the boys that victory is non-negotiable."

TRENDS:

* Nigeria earned a 1-0 victory in their only previous meeting at Saint-Etienne in 2009.
* The Nigerians have won just one of their previous 11 World Cup matches.
* France is unbeaten in three previous second-round matches at the World Cup, outscoring its opponents 6-1.
* No team had more shot attempts than France (50) during group stage play.

Tampa Bay @ N.Y. YANKEES

Tampa Bay +102 over N.Y. YANKEES

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.04)

The Rays just went into Baltimore and took three of four this past weekend. They have won four of five and they scored five runs or more in all four of those victories. Tampa has scored five or more in five of its past six and they are certainly playable in New York with Chris Archer going, another thoroughbred from the Rays stable. Archer is just 4-5 but that’s only because of a lack of run support. He comes in with a solid 3.29 ERA, a 48% groundball rate, 86 K’s in 93 innings and a strong 11% swing and miss rate. Archer made good on his pedigree in the 2H of last year and is primed to repeat this year. He already owns one of the top heaters in the game and if he's able maintain some of those control gains, it's reasonable to project a second half of ample Ks and an ERA close to his 2.67 ERA in the second half of last season.

The Yanks remain overvalued and true fade material. They have lost six of eight while scoring one run or less in three of those six losses. David Phelps has a 5.64 ERA over his last five starts and over that stretch his groundball/line-drive/fly-ball rate was 37%/26%/37%. Phelps has worked both as a reliever (9 appearances) and out of the rotation (10 games started) and he’s not well suited for either. He has four pure quality starts in 10 tries. His upside is really limited by lack of a dominant pitch, as his fastball barely hits 90 mph. Phelps’ low swing and miss rate of 5% screams out that he’s not going to be striking out too many and therefore it’s very difficult to get out of the jams he invariably gets in. With eroding control, that's a recipe for failure. David Phelps should never be favored over Chris Archer.

L.A. Angels @ CHICAGO

L.A. Angels -1½ +120 over CHICAGO

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.40)

Hector Noesi has appeared in 81 games since he appeared on the scene in 2011 with 32 of those coming as a starter. His ERA year by year including this year: 4.47, 5.82, 6.59, 5.07 and 4.94. That translates into a career ERA of 5.41 and 36 of Noesi’s appearances occurred when he was a Mariner pitching half his games in an extreme pitcher’s park. Noesi’s career groundball/line-drive/fly-ball is 38%/22%/40% and that is exactly the same as he’s posted this year in 11 starts. In his 32 career starts, he has seven pure quality one’s. Noesi also took abuse at Tacoma (5.83 ERA) last year, which indicates that his promotions were not merit-based. We've seen worse base skills but he needs some extra fastball juice or a more of a groundball lean to take the next step. That’s never happened and we're not optimistic that it will happen. At U.S. Cellular, Noesi is 1-3 with a 5.54 ERA, an xERA of 5.60, a 1.46 WHIP and an oppBA of .308 in 39 innings. He’ll now face one of the hottest hitting teams in the majors.

Garrett Richards has made some significant gains in 2014 and the reason for them can be partially found in his pitch mix. He is throwing two-seam fastballs 30% of the time in 2014 compared to just 7% of the time in 2013. It's a pitch that has limited batters to a .656 OPS and has induced groundballs at an elite 68% rate. Richards has 99 K’s in 101 innings to go along with a 2.76 ERA. Over his last five starts covering 35 innings, Richards’ has whiffed 37 while posting an ERA of 2.31. There are four reasons why this breakout has occurred. 1) Surging groundball rate raises floor and gives him unique skill; 2) 95-mph fastball, solid swing and miss lay foundation for more strikeouts; 3) consistent skills every outing 4) high quality start/disaster start split confirms he's very close to becoming an ace. The Halos should destroy the South Side in this game and nothing more needs to be said.

Pass on Monday's FIFA World Cup games.

Game: Colorado Rockies @ Washington Nationals
Time: Monday 06/30 7:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Washington -1.5 (+100)

The Colorado Rockies have always had a decided advantage when playing at home. This year certainly has been no exception. The Rockies own a 16-27 record on the road, while they have played better than .500 ball at home this season. The difference is the hitting. The Rockies produce an amazing 6.3 runs per game at home, but have fallen flat on the road where they dip to 3.8 runs per game. They will have their hands full tonight with Jordan Zimmermann who has regained his form from a year ago. Zimmermann has allowed just 5 total runs in his last five starts, while pitching to an ERA of 1.18. He has allowed just 23 hits and 5 walks in 38 innings of work. Washington has been coming up big at home where in their last 12 wins at home, 10 of them have come by 2 runs or more. Play Washington on the runline.

LAS VEGAS -- We've been waiting all season for the Los Angeles Dodgers to show just how good they are and right on cue, remarkably, in almost the same timeframe of the their incredible run last season, they haven't disappointed. Last season they made up a 9.5-game deficit in the NL West in 30 days. This season, they have made up 9.5 games in the standings in just 21 days.

The Dodgers have won 12 of their last 16 games while the Giants just got swept in a four-game series at home against the Reds, bringing their slide to 15 losses in their last 19 games. The big catalyst of the entire run has been Clayton Kershaw, who not only threw a no-hitter in the month of June, but he's gone 6-0 with a 0.82 ERA in the month, striking out 61 in 44 innings of work. He's had 28 consecutive scoreless innings, the eighth longest streak in a Dodger history that is filled with amazing pitching feats.

So when looking at today's line where the Dodgers are underdogs to the visiting Indians, you can't help but be excited to run to the betting window. Tonight's starter, Dan Haren (7-4, 3.83 ERA), doesn't get the juices flowing like Kershaw, but taking +104 with a team that has everything flowing in a positive direction should.

Haren has served up eight of his 16 homers this season in the month of June, but the Dodgers have still win three of his last four starts. Haren bends, but he doesn't break and he's gotten at least five runs of support in his last four starts.

The Indians will start the series tonight with Corey Kluber (7-5, 3.09), who went seven scoreless innings in his last start Wednesday at Arizona. He's won all six of his career starts against NL teams with a 2.29 ERA, and the Indians have won eight of his last 10 starts overall. He's got some pretty good credentials coming in which is why he's favored tonight.

But this is one of those spots where you throw out all the pitching trends and stats and ride the hyped locker room. The Dodgers have that winning attitude. They're feeling it and it's contagious for everyone in the Dodgers uniform. They know they're going to win every game and come out like champions with loads of confidence every night.

Sometimes confidence supersedes reality to the point where in tonight's situation, Kluber should be the favorite, but the line isn't in proper consideration for the Dodgers' current roll. This is the type of situation you just keep riding until the well runs dry, and if we use last season as an example, that dry point may not occur until September.

Monday selections:

Dodgers (Haren) +104 vs. Indians

Astros (McHugh) -105 vs. Mariners

Yankees (Phelps) -105 vs. Rays

Tigers (Sanchez) -125 vs. A's

MLB Betting Cheat Sheet

Kershaw's Magnificent Month

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw capped an unbelievable June in style, tossing seven shutout innings in Sunday's 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Kershaw finished June 6-0 with a 0.82 ERA, a stretch that featured 61 strikeouts against just four walks and a 28-inning shutout streak.

That's One Big Dog

Monday's action features only one major underdog play - the Colorado Rockies (+204, 7.5), who face Jordan Zimmermann and the host Washington Nationals. It's the Rockies' first game of the year as a 'dog of more than +200; they went 2-2 in such games last season.

The Price is Wrong

David Price will look to reverse a bizarre trend Tuesday as he leads the Tampa Bay Rays into New York for a date with the Yankees. Price has been a sinkhole for betters so far, earning $-466 - the lowest total for any pitcher whose team actually has a winning record in his starts (9-8).

Pitching Notes

Boston Red Sox right-hander Jake Peavy may be one of the worst value plays in baseball ($-845), but at least he has consistently paid off Under bettors. Peavy enters Monday's game against the visiting Cubs (+125, 8.5) 1-6 O/U in his last seven starts, and 4-11 O/U for the year.

Kansas City Royals ace James Shields has trended the other way as he prepares to face the host Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. Shields is a sensational 7-1 O/U in his last eight starts and 12-4 O/U on the year, tied with Justin Verlander and Stephen Strasburg for the most Overs in the majors.

Hitting Notes

Houston Astros sparkplug Jose Altuve is heating up, posting four straight multi-hit, multi-steal games to raise his average for the season to .347. The Astros are 3-1 SU and 1-3 O/U over that stretch; they open a series against visiting Seattle (-102, 7.5) Monday evening.

Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia may have some trouble at the plate Tuesday night as his Marlins square off against A.J. Burnett and the Philadelphia Phillies. Saltamacchia has been dreadful versus Burnett in his career ,going just 2-for-17 with 10 strikeouts.
Totals Streak

Oakland Athletics (6-1 O/U): The Athletics came within a hair's breadth of making it seven straight overs Sunday, missing by a single run en route to a 4-3 victory over host Miami. Oakland ends its first half of the season with a league-best 51 wins and a 41-37-3 O/U mark.

Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider going big in Washington, where the Nationals are +400 at -4.5. Zimmermann has allowed just five earned runs over his previous five starts, while Rockies rookie starter Yohan Flande was torched for four runs over five innings in his major-league debut five days ago.

Injury Notes

New York Mets starter Dillon Gee threw 2 2/3 solid innings during a rehab start in Lower-A over the weekend as he works his way back from a strained lat muscle. The Mets are 4-4 SU and 4-4 O/U in Gee's eight starts this season; he's 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA through 52 2/3 innings.

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista grounded out as a pinch-hitter Sunday in his first game action in a week. The Blue Jays went 3-3 S/U, 3-3 O/U and lost 66 units in Bautista's absence; he's expected to return to the lineup Tuesday against visiting Milwaukee.

Weather Watch

Wind at U.S. Cellular Field will be blowing in from right field at 16 mph for Monday's game between the Chicago White Sox (+137, 8.5) and the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Teams averaged just 6.5 runs and 1.67 homers in six games under similar conditions in 2013, well below stadium averages.

Nationals Park will see wind blowing out to left field at 9 mph for Tuesday's matchup between the Nationals and Colorado. The home team went 6-2 SU but just 2-6 O/U in eight games under similar wind conditions last season.

MINNESOTA TWINS (+115) over Kansas City 8:10 p.m. ET

Another FREE WINNER on Tampa Bay. Minnesota has been decent at home, 19-17 on the season, and while Kansas City took 2 of 3 from the Angels over the weekend , they are still just 3-7 their last 10. Royals starter Danny Duffy lost his last two starts and the Twins now they can compete with KC at home having swept them at Target Field in April. Take the Twins as another underdog winner.

The Reds travel to San Diego and look to keep their momentum and go for their 6th straight win and 8 of their last 10. During that stretch they have moved into 2nd place in their division. They send former Padres ace Mat Latos 1-0, 2.89 ERA to the mound to oppose rookie Jesse Hahn 3-1, 2.38 ERA. Latos makes his 4th start after being injured the beginning part of the year and should relish the fact he has the Padres who have totaled four runs while hitting .130 in their last four games. They also rank last in the majors with a .212 average and 3.0 runs per game. We looks for the Reds to keep the ball rolling. The Sharps say...

The Twins believe it or not are actually not having a bad season since on paper they really don't have major talent on their roster. I like the way Duffy has been pitching this year. If the Royals could give him some run support he would turn into a household name. Kansas City has a better bullpen as well. Take the Royals.

Take New York Mets/Atlanta Braves Under 7 Runs as a 5* Free Play. Braves starter Alex Wood (6-6 3.07) seems to have righted himself since returning from the minor leagues. He was stellar in his first game back against Houston and that should continue today against a weak hitting Mets lineup that will most likely be without David Wright. The Mets send Zack Wheeler (3-8 4.45) to the mound to oppose him. Although Wheeler has struggled a bit against the Braves this season he was magnificent last year. Last year he was 3-0 with an ERA under 3 in three starts. I expect him to return to that form tonight. Expect a pitcher’s duel in Atlanta and play the under.

959 OAK (+120) Hilton vs 960 DETAnalysis:

A’s @ Tigers

By Tony George

The league leading Oakland A’s fresh off a weekend road sweep at the Marlins, face a stiff test in a 3 game series at AL Central division leading Detroit, kicking off tonight in what should be a knockdown, drag out series between two premier teams in MLB. Oakland is red hot winning 11 out of their last 14 starts and bring up Scott Kazmir to the hill tonight in what looks to be a solid pitcher’s duel against Anibal Sanchez, with both pitchers under a 2.70 ERA for the season and both in good form.

Oakland’s offense ranks first in MLB at 5.16 runs per game, and their pitching staff’s ERA is ranked 2nd in ERA and 1st in WHIP. Kazmir is the stud ace of the bunch and with run support against a very suspect Tiger bullpen, I see an advantage here for Oakland on a tight moneyline tonight. Detroit surprisingly is only a .500 ball club at home with a 19-19 home record, and we all know Oakland is lights out on the road. The A’s, while road weary, understand the significance of this series, and I feel are the vastly better team with their best pitcher on the hill tonight. How often do you get Scott Kazmir on the hill, with a team who is on an 11-3 run, as an underdog? Too good to pass up for me.
