Lions at Argos: What bettors need to know

    B.C. Lions at Toronto Argonauts (5.5, 49.5)

The Toronto Argonauts might be without some key pieces on offense when they host the BC Lions on Tuesday. Toronto, which dropped a 24-16 decision at BC in Week 2, lost CFL leading passer Ricky Ray and running back Chad Kackert to knee injuries last week in a road win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Kackert, the leading rusher for the Argonauts, will miss at least a month while Ray is listed as day-to-day for the top team in the East Division.

Following a home-and-home sweep of the Edmonton Eskimos, the Lions have won three straight and have allowed just 40 points in that span after yielding 44 in their Week 1 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. Running back Andrew Harris is driving the offense with 296 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to go with 129 receiving yards and one touchdown reception. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay is enjoying a strong start to the season - with 974 passing yards, seven touchdown passes and only three interceptions.

    TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE LIONS (3-1): Slotback Nick Moore appears to have taken the place of Geroy Simon in BC’s passing schemes. Moore, who had 449 receiving yards in his first two seasons, has caught 17 passes for 241 yards in 2013 - good for second on the team behind wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux. Lulay, who has 173 rushing yards on 19 carries, is on pace to surpass last year’s career high of 477 yards. First-year cornerback Cord Parks has a team-leading two interceptions and shares the club's top honours with 19 tackles. Linebacker Adam Bighill, who has missed two games due to an ankle injury, participated in drills with the starting defensive unit at practice on Friday.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (2-2): Toronto signed running back Chris Jennings to replace the injured Kackert. Jennings was released by the Montreal Alouettes last week after rushing for 29 yards on eight carries in one game. The Argonauts released veteran linebacker Brandon Isaac, leaving their defense under the leadership of linebacker Robert McCune (team-leading 27 tackles) and defensive end Jonathan Williams (team-leading two sacks). Slotback Chad Owens is tied with Montreal running back Noel Devine for the league lead with 802 total combined yards.

    TRENDS:

    * Lions are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
    * The over is 6-0 in Argonauts last six home games.
    * The Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
    * Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in Toronto.

    EXTRA POINTS:

    1. Toronto is 0-2 against West Division opponents.

    2. The Lions have scored 73 of their 104 points in the second half.

    3. Argonauts backup QB Zach Collaros, who will likely start if Ray is sidelined, has completed 7-of-10 passes for 112 yards in spot duty this season. He also has 24 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

CFL faves cashing in at better than 73 percent

It's early in the Canadian Football League season, but favorites have an overwhelming edge so far in terms of betting.

The favorite has posted a record of 15-4 straight up (78.9 percent) after the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Saturday night and covered as 4-point road faves 32-20. Favorites are also 14-5 (73.7 percent) against the spread.

The Riders' victory makes the favorite 3-0 in Week 5 after the Calgary Stampeders covered as 5.5-point road favorites over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Friday night and the Montreal Alouettes covered as 4-point home faves over the Edmonton Eskimos Thursday night.

Faves had a perfect 4-0 ATS opening week to the season and a spotless 4-0 ATS record in Week 4, making it five straight covers for the chalk heading into Friday's action.

The week concludes Tuesday with the Toronto Argos hosting the B.C. Lions. The Lions are 5.5-point faves as the Argos will be without QB Ricky Ray. Backup Zach Collaros will start in his place.

CFL betting: Home underdogs 0-6 ATS in 2013

With the Hamilton Tiger-Cats failing to cover as 4-point home dogs against the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday night, the home underdog is now 0-6 against the spread on the season.

Homer underdogs were 0-4 heading into Week 5 on the CFL schedule. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost to the Calgary Stampeders 37-24 Friday evening and moved the trend to 0-5 as the Bombers were 5.5-point home dogs for that matchup.

Winnipeg is now 0-3 on the season as the home dog. With the loss Saturday, the Ti-Cats now move to 0-2 ATS as home dogs.

With the final matchup of the week, there is yet another opportunity to catch this trend as the Toronto Argonauts host the BC Lions. With Zach Collaros starting at quarterback in place of the injured Ricky Ray, the Argos are currently 5.5-point home underdogs.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
              By JASON LOGAN

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

              Schedule spot

The Arizona Diamondbacks will get all the in-flight movies and snack-sized bags of peanuts they can handle this week. The D-backs just flew from San Diego to Tampa Bay, taking on the Rays Tuesday and Wednesday. Following the finale in St. Petersburg, Arizona jumps on a plane to Arlington for a make-up game with the Texas Rangers Thursday, stemming from a postponed contest back in May.

After that solo show in Texas, the Diamondbacks board another cross-country shuttle and rush back to the East Coast to play the Boston Red Sox for three games, starting Friday. When it’s all said and done, Arizona will have traveled roughly 4,800 miles to play six games. The D-backs are 24-27 on the road for +0.23 units this season, and that's with a normal travel schedule. Arizona could be road kill come the end of the week.

              Lookahead spot

Indianapolis Colts fans have October 20 circled on the calendar, anticipating the return of former star QB Peyton Manning to Lucas Oil Stadium. The Denver Broncos visit the Colts in Week 7, in what should be one of the biggest media blitzes of the 2013 season. People are already buzzing about the return of No. 18 and oddsmakers didn’t hesitate to offer early odds on this Sunday Night Football matchup, posting Indianapolis as a 4-point home underdog.

The Colts come into the Denver game on a short week, having to play at San Diego on Monday Night Football in Week 6. With the Chargers falling out of the AFC picture over the past few years, Indianapolis could get caught looking ahead to Manning and the Broncos. Books are dealing the Colts as early 2.5-point road dogs versus the Bolts, a valuable sub-FG spread for the home side.

              Letdown spot

The WNBA celebrated its finest with the annual All-Star Game this past weekend, and with it took an extended hiatus from the 2013 season. Teams stopped playing on Tuesday July 25, but some clubs have had an even longer break depending on how the schedule trickled down. The drawn-out All-Star break comes at a bad time for the first-place Minnesota Lynx.

Minnesota, which sits tops in the league at 14-3 SU and 10-7 ATS, had won seven straight games before the break, playing its last contest on July 24 – an 81-69 win over Phoenix. The Lynx don’t take the court again until Friday’s home game versus San Antonio, a momentum-killing stretch of nine full days off. Minnesota could come out flat facing what should be an inflated pointspread against on the West's worst clubs. The Lynx have also failed to cover in their last two outings.

MLB Top 4: Division long shots worth a wager
                By JASON LOGAN

The MLB post-break schedule is well underway. Teams are turning the corner with the playoff push on the horizon.

These four clubs, who currently sit back of their division leaders, are starting to pick up steam and could provide solid value to win their division crown if you grab their futures odds now.

Washington Nationals (+800 to win NL East)

The Nationals failed to meet expectations in the first half of the season and find themselves 8.5 games back of the Braves in the NL East. Washington took three of four versus the Mets and has a five-game road trip to Detroit and Milwaukee this week. The Nats pitching staff is among the best in the majors and if the bats can catch up, they could put together a strong push in the final two months of the schedule.

Kansas City Royals (+5,000 to win the AL Central)

At first glance, rolling the dice on the Royals would seem like throwing your money down the tubes. And maybe at second and third glance, as well. But Kansas City is one of the hottest clubs in the majors right now, winning six straight heading into Tuesday, and is only seven back of the Tigers in the AL Central. The Royals can trim that lead with some cupcakes on sked – playing six of their next nine games against the Twins. The other three games are versus the Mets.

Baltimore Orioles (+700 to win AL East)

A quick look at the latest MLB futures might cause you to scrunch up your face when you get the Orioles. Baltimore is among the top contenders to win the World Series, priced at +1,200 – just behind the AL East-leading Red Sox (+1,000). The O’s dropped two of three to Boston this weekend but have smooth sailing into mid August, with upcoming series against the Astros, Mariners, Padres, and Giants. Baltimore can turn it on late, going 37-18 in August and September last season.

Colorado Rockies (+2,500 to win NL West)

The National League West is a frickin’ gong show. The Dodgers, who were once the worst bet in baseball, are on fire at the top of the division and the defending World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, are 7-16 this month. Who’s to say the Rockies couldn’t once again put together a late-season run? Colorado is only six games out of the NL West lead and closes the sked with a three-game set at Dodgers Stadium. Could that be a division-deciding series in late September?

Pujols could miss season, no value to moneyline

Albert Pujols. Once the most feared hitter in the game and at one time worth between 15 and 20 cents to the moneyline, could now miss the remainder of the 2013 season with a tear in his left foot.

The Angels' DH was hitting .258 with 17 homers and 64 RBIs prior to the injury which occured in the ninth inning of Friday's 6-4 loss to the Oakland A's.

"He's probably not worth anything to the moneyline or totals anymore," Ed Salmons, an oddsmaker at The LVH told Covers. "It would be so minimal that it's inconsquential."

Pujols signed a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels in 2011.

Prior to Monday's game against the Texas Rangers, the Angels were fourth in the American League West with a record of 48-55.
