Tiger Woods injured after second shot at U.S. Open?

Tiger Woods may have injured his left wrist on the first hole at the U.S. Open Thursday.

Tiger was in visible pain after hitting only his second shot of the tournament out of the ridiculously thick rough on the first hole. Woods also grimaced in pain on No. 5 after another hack from the thick stuff, but is playing through the pain. The extent of the injury is unknown but it could get worse with time, or just be the effects of a stinger.

Tiger is 2-over par after 10 holes and off to slow start at the rain-soaked Merion Golf Club after play was suspended due to darkness. Weather could be a factor again Friday. Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the low-70s with a 40 percent chance of rain. Winds will blow from the north at 16 mph in the morning.

Tiger was a +550 favorite to win outright prior to the first round and has slid all the way to +1200 at some books after just 10 holes of play.

Bettors may remember when Woods limped his way through the 2008 U.S. Open with a knee injury to victory. Tiger underwent season-ending knee surgery just two days after the win.

Here are the updated outright odds heading into play Friday courtesy of UWIN:

Adam Scott +550
Phil Mickelson +550
Luke Donald +700
Tiger Woods +1200
Rory McIlroy +1600
Charl Schwartzel +1600
Lee Westwood _2000
Webb Simpson +2500
Justin Rose +2800
Graeme McDowell +2800
Steve Stricker +3300
Nicolas Colsaerts +4000

Best bad weather over/under bets in baseball
By JASON LOGAN

The way the weather has been this month, players around the major leagues don’t quite feel like “The Boys of Summer”. More like the “Sultans of Soak”.

The 2013 MLB season has been plagued by cold, rain and even fog, forcing schedule makers to postpone 31 games so far – the second most cancellations by this point of the season since 2002. The 2011 campaign had 53 games shuffled due to crappy climates, with 32 PPDs as of June 12, according to John Schlegel of MLB.com.

There could be more postponements on tap this month, which has already had its share of delays and cancellations. Weather has been downright terrible in June and another rash of thunderstorms and rain is in the forecast over the next two days.

But rather than run for high ground, baseball bettors can find a way to make money off this stretch of soggy weather. If you’ve been stashing your bankroll away for a rainy day, we have six MLB stadiums that have produced value for totals bettors when the sun doesn’t shine.

Best bad weather over bets

Dodgers Stadium

That Albert Hammond was full of $hit man. The British singer once chimed “It Never Rains in Southern California”, but L.A. has seen its fair share of wet weather this spring. The Dodgers have produced a 13-5 over/under record when the forecast calls for clouds/rain. Their crosstown rivals, the Angels have also leaned toward the over in bad weather, with Angels Stadium boasting an 8-4 over/under when the skies grow dark.

Comerica Park

According to MLB.com, the Tigers have suffered through 24 postponements since 2002 – tied for eighth most in the majors. Detroit hasn’t let the cold spring climate cool off its bats, posting a 14-7 over/under count under a grey sky at Comerica Park. The Tigers are on the road this week but thunderstorms are in the extended forecast for trips to Minnesota and Baltimore.

Citizens Bank Park

The Phillies poor play isn’t the only thing keeping fans away from Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia has had 28 postponed games since 2002 – sixth most – and has been chilled by fall-like weather to kick off the summer. The Phillies are 14-8 over/under at home when rain clouds are in the forecast. Total bettors have also gotten a life from the winds in Philly, with a 10-5 over/under record when winds get up over 10 mph.

Best bad weather under bets

PNC Park

If you think your weather’s been bad, just thank your lucky stars you’re not a Pirates season ticket holder. Pittsburgh has played 34 games at PNC Park and every single day has either been cloudy or raining, and Thursday’s home date with the Giants is no exception. The Bucs have gone 12-21-1 over/under in those games, compared to 18-13 over/under on the road where they hit .298 compared to .248 as hosts. The Pirates are expected to get hit with thundershowers Friday and may see more showers versus the Angels this weekend.

Kauffman Stadium

Kauffman Stadium was singled out for its bad weather by Schlegel, with a grounds keeper telling him, “You don't need the Farmers' Almanac. You can pretty much follow the Royals' schedule, and the rain chances increase when they come into town”. The Royals average 3.91 runs at home when the sun is shining but 3.36 when the forecast predicts clouds and rain, leading to an 8-13 over/under mark in those games.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards

Flash floods and even hail storms have terrorized most of Maryland this month, and there’s more to come this weekend. Baltimore is 7-12 over/under at home in bad weather this season and averaging just 3.95 runs in those games for compared to 6.00 under the sun. A soggy Camden Yards is also impacting visiting teams, who average 5.62 runs in nice weather compared to only 4.24 at Oriole Park.

Yankees, A's could be fades after marathon Thursday tilt

The Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees will both have depleted bullpens heading into their respective games Friday.

The A’s prevailed 3-2 in 18 innings Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of the Bronx Bombers. Both teams gassed seven pitchers in the affair.

The A’s get to sleep in their own beds Thursday night before hosting the Seattle Mariners, while the Yankees make the short trip to duel with the Los Angeles Angels Friday.

The Yankees will have a very tired bullpen against a well-rested Angels squad. New York got a lackluster effort from starter Phil Hughes Wednesday night, who pitched only 4 1/3 innings before handing the ball over. The Yankees were forced to use four relievers in the 5-2 loss to the A’s.

New York will send Andy Pettitte, who has been dealing with back issues, to the mound Friday. If his back should flare up, the Angels (-125) could be a good bet .
The A’s (-199) will send Tom Milone to the hill Friday. The lefty has pitched at least seven innings in his last two starts, surrendering only three earned runs over the pair of outings.

2 UNIT = St Louis Cardinals @ Miami Marlins - CARDINALS TO WIN (-136)
Listed Pitchers: Westbrook vs Fernandez
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.47 units)

St Louis is coming off a series win vs the Mets taking 2 of 3 and they've now won 5 of their last 7 games. Over that span they've scored 46 runs (6.57 per game). The Cardinals are now 43-23 on the year and a very impressive 24-11 on the road. They head to Miami to take on the Marlins who are coming off a series loss at home vs Milwaukee which included a 10-1 loss last night. The Marlins are just 19-46 on the season and 11-22 at home. While the Cardinals sit 2nd in team batting average hitting .276 the Marlins are 29th hitting .229 as a team. The Cards have scored 329 runs to date this season (4.98 per game), while Miami is in last by over 30 runs with just 194 (2.98 runs per game). Tonight's starter for St Louis is Jake Westbrook who is coming off the DL but should be good for about 100 pitches. He is 2-1 on the season with a 1.62 ERA, .275 OBA and 1.46 WHIP. Rookie Jose Fernandez looks for another good start as he is 3-3 0n the season with a 3.17 ERA, .208 OBA and 1.15 WHIP. Tonight will be one of his toughest tests of the season against a great hitting Cardinals team. The Cards are 23-8 in their last 31 road games, 5-1 in their last 6 as a road favorite, and 8-2 in their last 10 vs NL East opponents. The Cardinals are also 8-3 in Westbrook's last 11 starts as a road favorite, and 5-2 in his last 7 starts vs a team with a losing record. The Marlins are just 11-23 in their last 34 home games, and 30-63 in their last 93 as a home underdog dating back to last season. Although Fernandez has pitched well this year the Marlins are 0-5 in his last 5 starts vs a team with a winning record. St Louis has taken 10 of their last 12 meetings with the Marlins and we are getting a good price on them tonight.

Game: San Francisco at Atlanta (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: San Francisco +125 (moneyline)

The Atlanta Braves looked like they were off and running away from the pack early on, as they jumped out to a 12-1 start. But, they were just swept in San Diego, and since their blazing start, the Bravos have been a pedestrian one game over .500. The Braves have had issues driving in runners in scoring position, residing second to last in the league with a poor .228 average. Madison Bumgarner has a 3.58 ERA on the season, and while Kris Medlen was a near invincible 10-1 a year ago with a 1.67 ERA, things have been much different this year as he is pitching well with a 2.88 ERA, but is just 3-6. That is a product of the Braves' inability to drive in runs. The Braves are now just 1-4 in Medlen's last five starts vs. a winning team. Take the road team here.

This game features the 32-35 Phillies at the 35-32 Rockies. Rockies potentially lost 3 top players yesterday as Troy Tulowitzki went down for several weeks with a busted rib and Dexter Fowler is doubtful due to a hand injury and Carlos Gonzalez is questionable with a foot injury. Phillies are 13-3 in there last 16 at Colorado so i want all clients on the Phillies for a solid 8* play.

Friday's National League betting cheat sheet and tips

Check out our quick-hitting betting notes on Friday’s National League action:

Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates (-159, 8)

Weather: High-60’s. Clear skies expected. Winds will blow out to right field at 8 mph.

Probable starters: Dodgers RH Stephen Fife (1-1, 3.78 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Jeff Locke (5-1, 2.39).

Fife has never faced the Pirates, and no player on Pittsburgh’s roster has a major-league at-bat against him, while Locke is 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in three games (two starts) lifetime against Los Angeles. Suspended L.A. players as a result of Tuesday's brawl: J.P. Howell, Skip Schumacher, Ronald Belisario Don Mattingly and Mark McGwire. The Pirates are 6-1 in their last seven games as a home favorite.

St. Louis Cardinals at Miami Marlins (122, 7.5)

Weather: Roof will most likely be closed due to thunderstorm risk.

Probable starters: Cardinals RH Jake Westbrook (2-1, 1.62 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (3-3, 3.17)

Westbrook will make his first start since mid-May after being sidelined with elbow inflammation. Fernandez has pitched well at home, allowing just five runs in as many starts - but has yielded three homers. The Cardinals are 6-0 in their last six Friday games.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets (-127, 7.5)

Weather: High-60s. 40 percent chance of showers. Winds will blow from left to right at 10 mph.

Probable starters: Cubs RH Edwin Jackson (2-8, 5.76 ERA) vs. Mets RH Shaun Marcum (0-7, 4.96)

Marcum can't buy a win this season, but he does own a 4-0 career mark versus the Cubs. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings between the clubs and 4-0 in Marcum’s last four starts.

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds (-140, 8.5)

Weather: Mid-70s. Clear skies expected. Winds will blow left to right at 6 mph.

Probable starters: Brewers RH Kyle Lohse (2-6, 4.03 ERA) vs. Reds RH Bronson Arroyo (6-5, 3.35)

The Reds swept a three-game set from the Brewers at home by a combined 22-11 from May 10-12, but Milwaukee has actually done quite well for itself lately with wins in five of the last six games. The under is 8-0 in Lohse’s last eight starts vs. a team with a winning record.

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-132, 7)

Weather: Low-80s. Clear skies expected. Winds will blow in from left field at 3 mph.

Probable starters: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (5-4, 3.58 ERA) vs. Braves RH Kris Medlen (3-6, 2.87)

The Braves return home after being swept in San Diego, and will face the last team to hand them three losses in a row. The San Francisco Giants defeated Atlanta at home May 10-12, outscoring the Braves 23-4. The over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies (-116, 9.5)

Weather: High-70s. Partly cloudy conditions expected. Winds will blow from right to left at 8 mph.

Probable starters: Phillies RH Kyle Kendrick (6-4, 3.22 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Juan Nicasio (4-2, 4.61)

Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki reportedly suffered a broken rib Thursday against Washington and could require up to six weeks to recover. Outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler also were hurt, although their injuries are not considered serious. Philadelphia won seven of nine meetings in 2012 and has taken a remarkable 27 of the last 33 encounters with Colorado dating back to Sept. 2007.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres (-121, 7)

Weather: Low-60s. Partly cloudy conditions expected. Winds will blow out to right field at 4 mph.

Probable starters: Diamondbacks RH Trevor Cahill (3-7, 4.02 ERA) vs. Padres LH Eric Stults (5-5, 3.53)

Cahill has lost three straight decisions and was rocked by the Giants in his last turn, giving up eight runs on nine hits in a season-low 3 2/3 innings. He has been tagged for 21 runs over 22 2/3 innings during his four-start winless drought, during which his ERA has risen from 2.48 to 4.02. Suspended Arizona players as a result of Tuesday's brawl: Ian Kennedy, Kirk Gibson, Eric Hinske. The over is 10-1 in Arizona’s last 11 road games.

Friday's American League betting cheat sheet and tips

Check out our quick-hitting betting notes on all of Friday’s American League games.

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (-110, 9.5)

Weather: High-70s. A 10 percent chance of showers. Winds will blow from left to right at eight mph.

Probable starters: Red Sox RH Ryan Dempster (4-6, 4.40 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (6-2, 3.89)

Dempster has put together three straight quality starts and has gotten plenty of support in the last two, with the Boston offense busting out for a total of 27 runs in those games. Tillman has had his own problems keeping the ball in the yard with 16 home runs allowed in 76 1/3 total innings. The BoSox are 0-4 in the last four meetings in Baltimore.

Kansas City Royals at Tampa Bay Rays (-170, 8)

Weather: Dome

Probable starters: Royals RH Luis Mendoza (1-3, 4.19 ERA) vs. LH Matt Moore (8-2, 3.78 ERA)

Mendoza has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven starts but is just 1-2 in that span. Moore has been knocked around in his last two outings, surrendering 15 runs (14 earned) over seven innings to suffer his first two defeats. The under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings at Tropicana Field.

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers (-131, 10)

Weather: Mid-90s. Mostly cloudy skies winds blowing in from center field at six mph.

Probable starters: Blue Jays LH Mark Buehrle (2-4, 5.06 ERA) vs. RH Justin Grimm (5-4, 5.25 ERA)

Buehrle has registered five quality outings over his last six starts - including a seven-inning stint last time out that saw him limit Texas to a run on four hits. Control will be a key for Grimm, who has issued six walks over his last two starts after surrendering only one free pass in his three previous outings combined. Eric Cooper will be the umpire behind the plate and the under is 4-1 in his last five behind the dish.

Chicago White Sox at Houston Astros (+165, 7.5)

Weather: Retractable roof

Probable starters: Chris Sale (5-4, 2.68 ERA) vs. Erik Bedard (1-3, 5.34 ERA)

Sale is looking to rebound after suffering back-to-back losses to the Oakland Athletics. Bedard was handed his first loss since April 26 on Saturday as he surrendered six runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings at Kansas City. The over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins (+126, 9)

Weather: A 30 percent chance of showers by game time and temperatures in the mid-70s. Winds will blow in from center field at 11 mph.

Probable starters: Tigers RH Rick Porcello (3-3, 4.86 ERA) vs. Twins LH Scott Diamond (4-5, 5.19)

Porcello was roughed up for five runs and 10 hits over five innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on May 23. Diamond is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts against Detroit this season and 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA in seven career outings against the Tigers. The Tigers are 16-6 in the last 22 meetings in Minnesota.

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (-148, 8)

Weather: Sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s. Winds blowing out to right field at 6 mph.

Probable starters: Yankees LH Andy Pettitte (5-3, 3.82 ERA) vs. Angels LH C.J. Wilson (4-5, 4.02)

Pettitte picked up his 250th career victory in style, allowing just one run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings in a 3-1 triumph over Seattle Saturday. Wilson suffered his second straight loss and fifth in his last six decisions after allowing four runs in five innings against Boston Saturday. The Yankees are 1-6 in Pettitte's last seven road starts vs. Angels and they could be fatigued from an 18-inning affair last night in Oakland.

Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics (-185, 7.5)

Weather: Sunny skies and temperatures in the low-60s. Winds will blow out to right field at 10 mph.

Probable starters: Mariners LH Joe Saunders (4-6, 5.12 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Tommy Milone (6-5, 3.69)

Saunders has a 3.47 ERA in 22 career starts against the Athletics and is 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two outings this year. Milone is 3-0 in his last five starts after giving up five runs and six hits over five innings in a loss to Seattle on May 12. The under is 6-1 in Milone's last seven starts vs. the Mariners.

Note: The A's used seven pitchers in an 18-inning victory over the Yankees Thursday.

Interleague

Washington Nationals at Cleveland Indians (-135, 7.5)

Weather: Temperatures in the mid-60s and winds blowing in from center field at 9 mph.

Probable pitchers: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (3-3, 3.59 ERA) vs. Indians RH Justin Masterson (8-5, 3.68)

Gonzalez saw his winless streak stretch to six starts with a no-decision Saturday in a 4-3 setback against the Minnesota Twins. At Progressive Field, Masterson is 5-1 with a 2.36 ERA this season. The under is 5-0 in Masterson's last fave interleague starts.

DETROIT (-135) over Minnesota
8:10 p.m. ET
Our free pick record is now on an 12-4 run in baseball, including eight underdog winners, but tonight we're going to lay a little lumber with the Tigers. We love how Detroit starter Rick Porcello is pitching right now going 8-3 in his last 11 starts, while also performing very well on this field. Meanwhile, Minnesota starter Scott Diamond has been horrendous at home going 1-6 with an ERA of almost 7.00. The Tigers have owned this series, especially at Target Field where they have 14 of the last 20 meetings, so let's ride that trend here and take the visiting favorite.

Doc's Sports

4-unit Play Take #914 San Diego Padres (-120) over Arizona Diamondbacks (10:10pm ET) There's clearly something wrong with Arizona Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill. In his last four stars, the normally reliable right-hander is 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA and 1.68 WHIP. It's easily the worst stretch he's had in two years with Arizona as his strikeout-to-walk ratio during that stretch is only 8-6. He may be fighting through an undisclosed injury or his mechanics could be a little off. Either way, the San Diego Padres should get some good whacks tonight. The Padres come in as winners of seven of their last nine contests and the offense has been a big reason. They've averaged 5.2 runs per game in those nine contests and haven't been held under three runs in any of them. Southpaw Eric Stults takes the hill for San Diego tonight. He doesn't get a lot of attention, but is a solid middle of the rotation arm. He's 5-5 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.15 WHIP and should have a big edge tonight against an Arizona lineup that struggles against lefties. The Padres have also been very good in Petco this season at 19-14. All signs point to the Pads in this matchup.

2-unit Play Take #907 St. Louis Cardinals (-140) over Miami Marlins (7:10pm ET) The St. Louis Cardinals have put together quite a season so far in 2013. They have the best record in the big leagues at 43-23 and also hold the best run differential at +102. Today they are an even better team as they get back right-hander Jake Westbrook from the disabled list. Westbrook was having a sensational season when he went down with an elbow injury. Through his first six starts, the right-hander was 2-1 with a miniscule 1.62 ERA. His peripheral numbers weren't as good, but his propensity to keep the ball down in the zone is the key to his success and his groundball rate is at a whopping 61%. Westbrook looked amazing in his two rehab starts in the minor leagues before coming back. He had a 1.69 ERA and struck out 10 batters with no walks. Today he'll face another lineup that is minor-league quality in the Miami Marlins. Miami has really struggled to score runs at an average of just 2.98 runs per game - dead last in the majors. Making matters even worse, Miami hitters have also struggled mightily against Westbrook over his career. Rookie Jose Fernandez pitches for the Marlins in this one, and he's been one of the few bright spots for the team this season. However, he hasn't faced a lineup like the Cardinals feature and I expect Fernandez to struggle as the season goes on due to his early success as a rookie. Once you do well in this league, everyone starts to pay attention and study your weaknesses. The Cardinals are one of the best organizations in the sport, and I fully expect them to find the chinks in the armor for Fernandez. Take the Cardinals in this spot.

Best of Luck - Doc's Sports
