Study Group: Sunday's Top 25 NCB Betting Notes

Check out our quick-hitting betting notes on all of Sunday’s ranked college basketball games:

(22) Pittsburgh at St. John’s (+6)

Pittsburgh looks to bounce back from back-to-back Big East losses when it takes on St. John’s in Madison Square Garden. Pittsburgh won seven of its last eight games before the skid. The Red Storm shoot a Big East-worst 64.8 percent from the foul line, rank second-to-last in 3-point percentage (30.2) and allow 66.5 points per game, good for third-to-last in the conference. The Panthers are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.

lllinois at (7) Michigan (-11.5)

Illinois looks to win its sixth straight game when it visits Michigan. The Fighting Illini’s five-game win streak includes victories over No. 1 Indiana on Feb. 7 and then-No. 18 Minnesota on Feb. 10. Michigan, which is 15-0 at home, has lost three of its last five and needed overtime to beat Ohio State 76-74 on Feb. 5. The Wolverines have beaten Illinois in the last four meetings, including 74-60 on Jan. 27 in Champaign. The Fighting Illini are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and Michigan is 0-5 ATS in its last five contests.

Boston College at (6) Duke (-16.5)

The Eagles are 0-6 all-time at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but did play Duke tough in Boston earlier this month in a 62-61 loss to the Blue Devils. Boston College must find a way to slow down Duke's dynamic duo of Mason Plumlee (17.5 ppg) and Seth Curry (17.1), who make the Devils one of only five teams in the country with two players averaging at least 17 points. The Blue Devils have lived and died with the 3-pointer all season, but had one of their finest perimeter shooting performances in Thursday's rout of Virginia Tech. Duke posted a .706 shooting percentage beyond the arc, the highest all season for a Division I team playing on the road. The Blue Devils are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.

Cincinnati at (25) Notre Dame (-2)

The Bearcats have lost four of five games and have slipped to 10th place in the Big East. Cincinnati would slip below .500 in league play with a loss to the Fighting Irish and any further decline could put their NCAA tournament hopes in jeopardy. Notre Dame has won six of its last eight games. The Fighting Irish defeated the Bearcats 66-60 in Cincinnati on Jan. 7, but are just 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

(5) Michigan State at (18) Ohio State (-3.5)

Michigan State, which pounded No. 7 Michigan on Feb. 12, is in the midst of a five-game stretch where it will play the other four ranked teams in the Big Ten. The Spartans fell out of first place with Tuesday’s home loss to top-ranked Indiana – snapping a five-game winning streak – and must face the Big Ten’s two stingiest scoring defenses (Ohio State and No. 17 Wisconsin) in succession. The Buckeyes have lost three of five, but are coming off a 70-44 thumping of Minnesota on Wednesday. Ohio State is 1-7 against top-25 competition this season, which includes a 59-56 loss at Michigan State on Jan. 19. The Spartans are 8-1 ATS in their last nine trips to Ohio St.

Value City Arena - Columbus, OH
Tip-off: Sunday, 4:00 p.m. ET
Line: Ohio State -3

No. 18 Ohio State looks for payback at home when No. 4 Michigan State pays a visit on Sunday afternoon.

When these two teams met on Jan. 19 in East Lansing, the Spartans pulled out a 59-56 victory behind a balanced attack. That win gave MSU its third win in four tries (SU and ATS) in this series, a run that started with a 58-48 win in Columbus last season. The Spartans are coming off a tough home loss to Indiana on Tuesday, but they are 4-0 after a loss this season and 9-2 SU after an ATS defeat. Ohio State ended a three-game ATS losing skid with a 71-45 pounding of Minnesota on Wednesday, when it held the Gophers to 29% FG and 13% threes.

Michigan State doesn't have great offensive firepower, averaging just 70.0 PPG, but it does have a strong FG Pct. (46.8%) and also rebounds very well with a +6.9 RPG margin. Defensively, the Spartans are outstanding, allowing 59.6 PPG on 39.1% FG.Junior SG Keith Appling (13.8 PPG, 3.9 APG) leads the team in scoring, but shoots just 41% FG and 32% threes. Appling had 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in last month's win over OSU. C Adreian Payne (9.8 PPG, 7.0 RPG) also had a huge game against the Buckeyes with 14 points (5-of-6 FG) and five rebounds. He shoots an exceptional 59% FG including 10-of-18 threes. Sophomore swingman Branden Dawson (10.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG) also shoots a high percentage (56% FG), but makes just 54% of his foul shots. Dawson had nearly a double-double against Ohio State last month with nine points and 10 rebounds. Freshman SG Gary Harris (13.2 PPG) is the team's most consistent three-point shooter at 43%, while making 47% FG and 75% free throws.

Ohio State's offense is solid, averaging 70.7 PPG on 45.4% from the field and 36.5% from three-point range. The Buckeyes also help themselves by committing just 11.0 TOPG. But where OSU really shines is on the defensive end, allowing just 59.0 PPG on 39.3% FG. PF Deshaun Thomas leads the Big Ten with 20.1 PPG thanks to a 45.3% FG clip (38% threes) and 84% from the free-throw line. Thomas lit up the Spartans for 28 points (10-of-20 FG, 6-of-11 threes) and seven rebounds last month. Junior SG Lenzelle Smith, Jr. (9.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG) shoots an identical 45.3% FG, and is slightly better from long range at 39% threes. Smith was awful against MSU earlier this year, making just 2-of-7 shots for six points in 30 minutes. PG Aaron Craft (9.2 PPG, 4.3 APG, 3.7 RPG, 2.0 SPG) didn't shoot well against the Spartans last month either (2-for-8 FG, 1-for-5 threes) but he did have six assists and five steals. For the season, he's shot just 39% FG (31% threes), but he makes 81% of his foul shots and is a tenacious on-ball defender. Backup PG Shannon Scott (5.0 PPG, 3.8 APG, 1.7 SPG) has been outstanding in taking care of the basketball, as his 3.13 Ast/TO ratio shows.

Daytona 500 Picks

Race: Daytona 500
Date: Sunday February 24, 2013
Track: Daytona International Speedway
Time: 1pm ET
TV: FOX

Well, well, well! Welcome back, fellow NASCAR fans! I am so excited to share another season with you all. This one is looking up with an incredible amount of changes from new drivers to new teams to new cars. As you all should already know, we have moved onto what NASCAR is calling the "Gen-6" car this year. Essentially, we are seeing bodies more in line with the street models of the Fords, Chevys, and Toyotas. Dodge is excluded since they unfortunately pulled sponsorship from the big league. That being said, it's a whole new ball game with these cars from the spoilers, grills, and even the tires and how they are run. We are going to see what I would call virgin racing because these cars are brand new to these tracks this year.

As per usual, there's no place like Daytona to start off the new season. We are going to see the running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday to ring in the new season. This past Saturday night was the Sprint Unlimited, formally the Bud Shootout. Kevin Harvick took the checkers after a wreck on lap 15 took out a good portion of the field. Tony Stewart ran strong and is going to be one to watch. Now, that being said, driver Danica Patrick is making her debut pole start as the first female pole winner in NASCAR Sprint Cup history. She was able to beat out Jeff Gordon for the starting position for Sunday's race. Prior to the big race, we are going to see the duels on Thursday, which will set another portion of the field.

Daytona is going to be a wild one. While the Unlimited was a bit uneventful, we have to consider that only 19 cars were running the field as opposed to the usual 43. Between the new cars, new drivers, and new teams, we should have a very exciting start to the season. We have Danica Patrick on the pole competing against fellow competitor and boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the Rookie of the Year title as well. It should be interesting to see how their chemistry on and off the track affects performance. That being said, let's move on to the big race.

Daytona International Speedway is a bit of a monster in the sense that it's huge with some pretty crazy banking. The track itself is a 2.5 mile superspeedway with 31 degree banking in the turns and 18 degrees through the trioval. The frontstretch comes in at a whopping 3800 feet with the backstretch not too shabby at 3000 feet. The apron on the track varies greatly here too, which is important as some guys try to use it to pick up speed, momentum, and track position. If a driver crosses the line to gain position, though, he is penalized because NASCAR has ruled this as an illegal move. The apron spans anywhere from 12 to 30 feet wide depending on what part of the track you're looking at. This is a track where skill means a lot because of the drafting element here. Despite years past and perhaps because of the changes in the cars, we will more than likely see drafting lines instead of drafting pairs. The drivers will hook up bumper to bumper and essentially push each other around the track. They are able to get momentum and pull away from other packs this way. It's all aerodynamics here. If a driver loses the draft, he can easily fall 15 spots back in the blink of an eye. That's essentially why we don't see track position as that important here. Guys can go from 20th to 5th in one lap depending on the movement of the draft lines. Speed is important, without a doubt, but the draft has to be maintained for the drivers to have a shot at the top spot.

That being said, we are going to see fuel mileage as a major factor here. Tires are important, most notably when guys lose the draft. If they are on old tires, they are just going to get blown out of the water in terms of speed here. Fuel mileage will more than likely be the name of the game this time around though. I think that we are going to see some serious pit strategy, so the most important factors are no mistakes on pit road and those all important pit strategies down to the wire by the drivers and crew chiefs. Coming to what everyone wants to know, I think that the ones to really watch on Sunday are going to be the Stewart-Haas driver Tony Stewart and also the winner of our Sprint Unlimited, Kevin Harvick. Those guys clearly locked in what they need at Daytona to be up front. They and handling and speed worked out better than the rest of the field. While Danica Patrick has the pole, I think that she may continue to struggle the navigation of driving with 42 other cars. It's one thing to have a fast car on the track alone, but it's totally another to have that many other competitors trying to claim one spot at 210 mph. I think this will be a good year of development for Patrick, as she spends her first fulltime year on this circuit. She will definitely gain a lot of experience that will help her in the long run. One other name to watch is Jeff Gordon. He is sitting 2nd next to Patrick and you just can't ever count him out. He said after the Unlimited that handling was not an issue for him and that only speed was something that they needed to work on. Clearly, they worked that issue out by snagging the 2nd starting position.

Here's a rundown of your potential winners on Sunday:

My Pick to Win: Tony Stewart

Middle of the Road Prediction: Clint Bowyer

Dark Horse Pick/Longshot: Danica Patrick

Bowyer may have won the championship last year had it not been for a late-year confrontation with Jeff Gordon. He's got a lot he personally wants to prove and I think that he will definitely make his presence known. While Patrick is a dark horse, it is possible that speed may be all you need to take the win. If she can manage to stay out of wrecks and the potential "big one", then she may have a chance so long as her race trim is as fast as her qualifying trim.

Bulls at Thunder: What bettors need to know

Chicago Bulls at Oklahoma City Thunder (-8.5, 196)

The Chicago Bulls have the second-best road record as they visit one of the top home clubs in the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. Chicago’s 17-10 road mark trails only the San Antonio Spurs but the Bulls will face a tough test in battling Oklahoma City, which is a gaudy 24-4 at home. The Bulls are just 4-6 over their last 10 games but Oklahoma City lost a season-worst three straight games before downing the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

Oklahoma City shot 57.8 percent from the field and matched a season-best for points in the 127-111 win over the Timberwolves. But the Thunder’s recent play on the defensive end remains substandard in the view of coach Scott Brooks and several players. “All five guys that are on the court have to be tied on a string,” center Kendrick Perkins said after the win over Minnesota. “It only takes one guy to mess up the whole thing as far as our defensive concepts.” Chicago routed the Charlotte Bobcats 105-75 on Friday one night after a woeful 86-67 loss to the Miami Heat. Oklahoma City defeated the Bulls 97-71 in Chicago on Nov. 8.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, WGN (Chicago), Fox Sports Oklahoma

ABOUT THE BULLS (32-23): Chicago reached 100 points for just the second time all month with the trouncing of the Bobcats. Perhaps more pleasing was that the Bulls had 37 assists on 42 baskets and committed just six turnovers. The Bulls had 27 miscues in the loss to the Heat. “I thought we played a great team game and we needed this game after (Thursday) night,” forward Luol Deng said afterwards. “I thought we didn’t play well at all (against Miami). It feels good just to get a win. We’ve just got to keep it moving.” Point guard Kirk Hinrich (elbow) has missed nine of the last 10 games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (40-15): Guard Russell Westbrook had a splendid performance with nine assists and seven rebounds to go with a season-best 37 points in the victory over the Timberwolves. Westbrook was 13-of-22 from the field and made all nine of his free-throw attempts. “He had nine assists, that’s good basketball,” Brooks said afterwards. “The way he scored, he took a lot of good shots and had a high percentage. Russell had a very, very good all-around game.” Westbrook is averaging 27.4 points over the last five games. Forward Kevin Durant had 27 points and is averaging 29 over the past four outings.

TRENDS:

* Bulls are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.
* Thunder are 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games.
* Over is 4-0 in Thunder’s last four overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Bulls’ last five vs. Western Conference foes.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Chicago has split four meetings in Oklahoma City.

2. The Thunder made all 22 of their free-throw attempts in the victory over Minnesota.

3. The Bulls are 23-7 when holding opponents below 90 points.

Winnipeg vs. New Jersey - February 24, 2013 - 5:00 PM
Pick: 7* New Jersey -155
I'm playing on NEW JERSEY. Both these teams were in action yesterday afternoon. The Devils lost 5-1 at Washington. The Jets coughed up a lead at Philadelphia, losing 5-3. I expect that scheduling situation to favor the Devils.
Despite suffering a loss the last time it was in that situation, New Jersey is an impressive 10-3 the last 13 times that it played the second of back-to-back games.
On the other hand, the Jets are an ugly 3-12 the last 15 times that they played the second of back-to-back games, 2-11 when doing so on the road.
The Devils have dominated the Jets. They're 6-1 the last seven in this series and 15-5 the last 20. That includes a 5-0 mark at New Jersey. The most recent meeting resulted in a 5-1 NJ victory. All signs point to more of the same here. *7 personal favorite

Winnipeg vs. New Jersey - February 24, 2013 - 5:00 PM
Pick: *9 blue chip @ Under 5.5 -135
I'm playing on New Jersey and Winnipeg to finish UNDER the total. Both teams saw their game yesterday finish above the total, each giving up five goals. I expect both to be motivated to improve defensively here.
The last time that the Devils allowed five goals (2/16) they saw their next game finish with a score of 2-1. Including that result, the UNDER is 172-102-30 the last 300+ times that they allowed four or more goals in their previous game. That includes a 29-18-7 UNDER mark when they've been in that situation the past couple of seasons.
The UNDER is 4-2 the last six times that the Devils played the second of back-to-back games.
The UNDER is 9-7-4 the last 20 times that these teams met, dating back to when the Jets were the Thrashers. Thirteen of those 20 games produced five or fewer goals. I expect this one to do the same.*9 blue chip

Around the Rink: Sunday's NHL Betting Notes

Check out our betting notes on all eight NHL games on tap Sunday:

Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers (+144, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Tuukka Rask (BOS), Jacob Markstrom (FLA)

Boston won its second straight game and improved to 6-1-1 on the road with a 4-2 triumph over Tampa Bay on Thursday. Tuukka Rask has won four of five career outings versus Florida while posting two shutouts and registering an ultra-slim 0.97 goals-against average. The Panthers are 0-1-3 during their last four home games - and they weren't too impressive in a 3-1 road loss to Pittsburgh on Friday. The Bruins are 5-0 in their last five Sunday games.

Winnipeg Jets at New Jersey Devils (-158, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ondrej Pavelec (WSH), Martin Brodeur (NJ)

New Jersey has won its last five home meetings with Winnipeg dating back to its days as the Atlanta Thrashers. The Devils hardly looked like an elite club in their 5-1 road loss to Washington on Saturday afternoon, but they'll return home where they have collected points in eight of nine games (6-1-2). Special teams are killing Winnipeg as it has failed to score on its last 21 power-play opportunities. The Jets are 1-6 in the last seven meetings.

Vancouver Canucks at Detroit Red Wings (+112, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Roberto Luongo (VAN), Jonas Gustavsson (DET)

Detroit snapped a five-game winless streak on Saturday, defeating the Nashville Predators 4-0 at home. The Canucks also shut out the Predators as Roberto Luongo stopped 23 shots at Nashville on Friday and are 2-0-1 on their four-game road trip. The under is 4-0-3 in the Red Wings’ last seven Sunday games.

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders (-110, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Cam Ward (CAR), Kevin Poulin (NYI)

The Hurricanes will face the Islanders at New York on Sunday after posting a 6-4 victory there on Feb. 11. The six goals Carolina scored in that game matched a season high, but the club has struggled offensively in the three games since losing Jeff Skinner to a concussion, getting outscored 12-5. The Islanders are beginning a season-high seven-game homestand, but New York has been less effective at home this season, posting a 2-6-0 record. The over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks (-254, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Steve Mason (CBJ), Corey Crawford (CHI)

Columbus has lost eight straight games in the all-time series between the teams since posting a 4-3 victory in Chicago on Feb. 18, 2011. It now has the daunting task of trying to hand the Blackhawks their first regulation loss of the season. Chicago improved to 14-0-3 after posting a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday, setting the record for most games without a regulation loss to start a season. Columbus has allowed 37 goals during its losing streak against Chicago while scoring only 15.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Pittsburgh Penguins (-170, 6)

Probable starting goaltenders: Anders Lindback (TB), Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT)

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to move forward without second-leading scorer Evgeni Malkin for an indefinite period. The reigning Hart Trophy winner experienced concussion-like symptoms after sliding awkwardly into the boards and hitting his head in Friday’s victory over the Florida Panthers. Pittsburgh has won the last three meetings, outscoring Tampa Bay 18-6 in the process.

Phoenix Coyotes at Calgary Flames (-106, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Mike Smith (PHX), Danny Taylor (CGY)

The Phoenix Coyotes attempt to post their second win over the Calgary Flames in seven days. Phoenix posted a 4-0 home triumph over Calgary on Monday and has taken seven of the last nine meetings between the clubs. The Flames are 2-10 in their last 12 vs. a team with a losing record.

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks (-168, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: J.S. Giguere (COL), Viktor Fasth (ANH)

Anaheim hasn't played since extending its winning streak to five games with a 3-2 triumph over Columbus on Monday. Viktor Fasth, who is 9-0-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average, turned aside 31 shots in a 3-0 victory over the Avalanche on Feb. 6. Colorado has scored just one goal in each of its last two contests and the under is 4-0 in the Avalanche’s last four games vs. a team with a winning record.

WGC - Accenture Match Play
by Matt Fargo

Semifinal

After crazy days with snow in Arizona and all four top seeds getting bumped after the first two rounds, we are finally back to normal at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Two rounds on Saturday were not expected but everything worked out fine and we are left with a great Sunday Final Four. True golf fans cannot dislike any of the remaining four players (well maybe).

The weather wanted to get in the way again on Saturday with an early frost delay but the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship got off as expected and was able to finish both rounds. With 12 of the top 16 players in the field already gone, there were not many options for upsets but there was certainly not a lot of drama. In Round 3, only one match made it to #18 when Steve Stricker took out Scott Piercy 1 up. Four of the eight matches didn’t even make it past #15.

The quarterfinals saw some tighter matches with Jason Day and Hunter Mahan both winning 1 up while Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter were able to close out their matches on #16. There is no true underdog left as we have two defending champions remaining (Poulter and Mahan), a player who is 13-3 in this event (Kuchar) and the unflappable Aussie (Day) which makes for some exciting golf in the semifinals on Sunday.

Listed are two Semifinal Round Matchup Best Bets (All for 2 Units):

Hunter Mahan +120 over Ian Poulter

Hunter Mahan is the underdog despite being the defending champion and rightfully so…sort of. Considering Ian Poulter took as much time off as he did and is playing as well as he is, is impressive. He is now an incredible 19-3-2 in his last 24 matches in this format which is off the charts. But the fact that Mahan has gone 151 consecutive holes without trailing is even more impressive. This is going to be an incredible match if it plays out like it should and the value is on the defending champion.

Matt Kuchar -140 over Jason Day

As much as I hate taking the chalk, I have to back Matt Kuchar here. He is still alive in our futures at 30-1 and we can root along for that only but we has a good edge here. He took out one of the hottest players in the tournament in Robert Garrigus as he started strong and would not led down, building a four-hole lead and winning 3 and 2. Jason Day defeated two Majors winners in one day and while he played well in the quarters, his opponent Graeme McDowell gave it to him.

I fully expect the Virginia Cavaliers to roll by double-digits at home today over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in ACC action. The Cavaliers (18-8) are a bubble team in terms of the NCAA Tournament and they need to finish strong if they want to be playing in the Big Dance.

Off two straight road losses to North Carolina (81-93) and Miami (50-54), Virginia will be highly motivated for a victory when it returns home today to face lowly Georgia Tech (14-11). The Cavaliers are a sensational 15-1 SU & 11-2 ATS at home this season, outscoring opponents by a whopping 17.7 points/game.

Virginia actually lost at Georgia Tech 60-66 in their first meeting of the season. The revenge factor only adds more fuel to the Cavaliers' fire today. They'll be up against a Yellow Jackets squad that is just 2-5 in true road games this season. Georgia Tech is just 6-22 ATS in its last 28 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

The Cavaliers are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400. Virginia is 6-0 ATS in its last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. These two trends combine for a 14-0 system backing the Cavaliers. Bet Virginia Sunday.

NHL

Today's board has quite a few mismatches - and we are going to play with those.

Hurricanes / Islanders OVER 5.5 -115 *1 Unit*
Two over teams that play to overs against each other. They have gone 7-3 to the over their last 10 and both teams have played more overs then unders so far this season.

Ducks PL -1.5 +175 *0.75 Units*
Colorado is on a back to back against one of the best teams in hockey - not liking their chances. The Ducks are 12-2-0-1 on the season and have had very little trouble scoring.

Penguins PL -1.5 +175 *0.75 Units*
10 of 12 Pittsburgh wins have been by 2+. The Lightning are on a B2B, and typically have struggled on the road and in general.

Bruins PL -1.5 +200 *0.75 Units*
The Bruins are 6-2 on the road, while the Panthers are just 2-6 at home. Florida have dropped 6 of 7 overall and 5 straight at home. While the 10-4 Bruins are on 3 days rest and will be ready to go.

Blackhawks PL -1.5 +105 *0.75 Units*
Chicago is playing the worst team in the NHL, which is why this PL is almost juicy. The Hawks have won 9 of 10 against CLB, and are an NHL record 14-0-3 to start the season. The Jackets are on a B2B and are just 5-14 on the season.

Big Dozen double digit home favorites are 10-9 vs spread. Illini is 3-3 on road, winning last two on foreing soil; its road losses are by 7-23-5 points. Michigan lost three of last five games, but is 6-0 at home, with four wins by 15+ points.
-- Florida State lost four of last five road games, with all four losses by 18+ points, only win by hoop at Ga Tech; Seminoles are 5-2 in their last seven games vs Virginia Tech, sweeping Hokies LY in games decided by 1-4 points. ACC home underdogs of 4 or less points are 9-3 vs spread. Hokies lost last nine games, losing by 32 at home to Duke in last game; three of their last four losses were by 10+ points.

-- MAAC is #14 conference, Big South #29, so class edge to Siena team that is awful, scoring 55.2 ppg while losing last five games. Saints have one win this season by more than five points. Radford lost four of last five games, losing four of last five on road; three of their last four wins were by 3 or less points. Siena split its last six home games, but almost impossible to endorse either side in this battle of lightweights.
-- Montana State lost last four games, allowing 80.8 ppg; its 55.7 eFG% is 4th-worst in country, but Bobcats won five of last seven home games vs D-I opponents. South Dakota lost its last six games, with four of last five losses by 13+ points; Coyotes lost last three road games, by 13-19-15 points. South Dakota makes 37.4% behind arc, so they should get some good shots vs Bobcats' porous defense.

Bulls at Thunder (Sun): Reports last week suggest that star PG Derrick Rose is further away from rejoining Chicago. Still, the Bulls appear in no danger of missing the playoffs. Oklahoma City has had time to recover following a disappointing wire to wire home loss to Miami just before the All Star break.

The Thunder should be in good form to continue their outstanding play at OKC where they were 23-4 prior to the break. There may be a point or two of value in playing the hosts considering Chicago has been so strong on the road (15-10). OKC won the earlier meeting, 97-91, as 2½ point road favorites. THUNDER.

15* ACC GAME OF THE DAY on Virginia -9.5

15* NBA Sunday No-Doubt Rout on New York Knicks -10

Off a season-high four straight losses, the New York Knicks head into this contest with the Philadelphia 76ers more motivated for a victory than they've been all year. I look for them to roll the 76ers at home tonight and emphatically put an end to this 4-game skid.

Philadelphia is the perfect team for New York to face to get back on track. The 76ers have also lost four straight, including a 90-114 home defeat at the hands of the Miami Heat last night. Fatigued from the back-to-back situation, and likely to suffer a hangover from that loss to the defending champs, I don't even expect the 76ers to show up tonight.

The Knicks are 19-8 at home this season, while the 76ers are just 6-17 on the road. New York has won two of three meetings with Philly this season with its wins coming by 16 and 22 points. I expect a similar blowout in this one tonight. The Knicks are 15-7 ATS in the last 22 meetings in this series, including 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home meetings.

The 76ers are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games playing on 0 days rest, including 2-10 ATS when playing on back-to-back days this season. The Knicks are 36-17 ATS in their last 53 home games. Philadelphia is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 road games. The 76ers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Take the Knicks Sunday.

-2-105 (http://affiliates.5dimes.com/tracking/Affiliate.asp?AffID=af000123&mediaTypeID=633&Image=/tracking/banner/160x600/5dimes-MB-160x600v4.gif&AffUrlID=176) at 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)

15* NBA Non-Conference KNOCKOUT on Portland Trail Blazers -2

The Portland Trail Blazers will be more motivated for a victory tonight than they have been all season. They enter this game on a season-high seven game losing streak and must stop the bleeding now if they want to make a run at the playoffs. I fully expect them to put an end to this skid tonight with a home victory over the Boston Celtics.

Portland just got Wesley Mathews, one of the most underrated players in the league, back from an ankle injury last time out. The Blazers nearly upset the Lakers as a 9.5-point road underdog on Friday, eventually falling 107-111 due to 40 points from Kobe Bryant. Matthews almost single-handedly kept the Blazers in the game late as he nailed several 3-pointers down the stretch. He finished with 15 points and 4-for-7 from 3-point range.

Portland is 17-9 at home this season and it still has one of the best home-court advantages in the league. Boston has been playing well of late, but it comes in overvalued because of it. The Celtics are just 9-17 SU & 9-15-2 ATS in all road games this season.

Boston is 25-43 ATS after a win by 10 points or more over the last 3 seasons. The Celtics are 5-15 ATS off a road win by 10 points or more over the last 3 seasons. Portland is 25-11 ATS in home games after failing to cover 2 of their last 3 against the spread over the last 3 seasons. Roll with the Blazers Sunday.

20* Bulls/Thunder ESPN Sunday Night BAILOUT on UNDER 196

The Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder will take part in a defensive battle tonight on ESPN. When good teams like this get together the defense usually wins out. Both teams are more than capable of shutting one another down defensively, which has been the case in this series in recent meetings.

The Bulls are allowing just 91.1 points/game this season as one of the best defensive teams in the league. Oklahoma City doesn't get enough credit for its defense because it has Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook putting up a bunch of points each night offensively. The Thunder allow just 96.9 points/game at home this year.

Each of the last three meetings between the Bulls and Thunder have seen 189 or less combined points. Chicago won 99-90 at home in 2010 for 189 combined points, Oklahoma City won at home 92-78 at home in April of 2012 for 170 combined points, and the Thunder won on the road 97-91 in in November of 2012 for 188 combined points in their first meeting this season. These teams have averaged a combined 182.3 points/game in their last three meetings.

The UNDER is 5-0 in Bulls last 5 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The UNDER is 8-0 in Thunder last 8 games after scoring more than 125 points in their previous game. The UNDER is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in this series. These three trends combine for a 19-1 system backing the UNDER. Bet the UNDER in this game Sunday.

4-STAR Chicago over OKLAHOMA CITY - A few recent blowouts are in people's minds still here but this is a game we see as unlikely to be a blowout. Look for the Bulls to show up in primetime and make this a close game.
Chicago got a nice little build me up game Friday beating Charlotte 105-75. They had a ridiculous 37 assists on 42 baskets in that game. The Bulls are 6-0 ATS (15.5 ppg) since January 07, 2000 as a dog with at most one day of rest after a double digit win in which more than 75% of their baskets were assisted. More importantly, teams following a game where at least 84.1% of a team's baskets were assisted are 169-134-3 ATS.
Amazingly that efficiency went along with committing just six turnovers. The Bulls are 9-0 ATS (11.6 ppg) since February 04, 2009 as a road dog with at most one day of rest after a game in which they had at least five fewer turnovers than their season-to-date average.
Chicago shot 50.6% from the field in that game. The Bulls are 7-0 ATS (10.6 ppg) since April 12, 2011 on the road with at most one day of rest after a win in which they shot at least 50% from the field.
Luol Deng had a solid 14 points in the game including going 2-of-3 on threes. The Bulls are 5-0 ATS (6.4 ppg) since January 29, 2010 with at least a day of rest after a win on the road in which Luol Deng shot better than 50% from the arc.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: OKLAHOMA CITY by 3
4.5-STAR Chicago and Oklahoma City over - This is the highest total Chicago's played to this season but they are 3-1 over with totals over 190 already. Oklahoma City has only had one total under 200 the past six weeks and that well over. Only two of their last 18 games has a combined score under 200 and we don't see it happening here.
Chicago is coming off an easy 105-75 win over Charlotte Friday. They shot 50.6% from the field. The Bulls are 12-0 OU (20.0 ppg) since April 17, 2006 as a dog with at most one day of rest after a double digit win in which they shot at least 50% from the field.
They amazingly had 37 assists on 42 baskets in that game. The Bulls are 6-0 OU (20.2 ppg) since April 22, 2006 as a road dog after a double digit win in which they had at least thirty assists.
That goes along with having just six turnovers. The Bulls are 7-0 OU (17.9 ppg) since March 07, 2008 as a dog after a double digit win in which they had at least five fewer turnovers than their season-to-date average.
Chicago had eight in double figures as no one played too long, as Taj Gibson led with 17. The Bulls are 8-0 OU (11.6 ppg) since May 08, 2011 on the road with at least a day of rest after a win on the road in which Carlos Boozer was not the Bulls' high scorer.
Oklahoma City won over Minnesota, 127-111 Friday. Russell Westbrook led them with 37 points in that game. The Thunder are 6-0 OU (8.4 ppg) since May 21, 2012 at home after a win in which Russell Westbrook was the Thunder's high scorer.
He's been red hot shooting recently, and nailed both threes in this game. The Thunder are 6-0 OU (11.9 ppg) since April 24, 2010 after Russell Westbrook shot better than 50% from the arc the last two.
He also had five turnovers in that game and has been sloppy with the ball recently. The Thunder are 5-0 OU (11.5 ppg) since February 03, 2012 at home after Russell Westbrook had at least 5 turnovers the last two.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: 213 points

4-STAR PORTLAND over Boston - We see Boston running out of a little steam here tonight. Portland is one of the toughest places in the league to play. Look for Portland to get a much needed win tonight.
Boston is coming off a big win in Phoenix Friday night. They outshot Phoenix 56-42% in that game, giving the Suns no chance. The Celtics are 0-8 ATS (-9.6 ppg) since December 29, 2010 on the road after a game on the road in which they outshot their opponent by at least 10 percent.
However just 19 of those 44 baskets were assisted. The Celtics are 0-8 ATS (-6.2 ppg) since January 08, 2010 as a road dog with at least one day of rest after a win in which the percentage of their baskets that were assisted was at least ten percentage points lower than their season-to-date average.
They were led by Jeff Green with 31 points as Paul Pierce had just eight. The Celtics are 0-5 ATS (-12.1 ppg) since May 18, 2012 with at least a day of rest after a win on the road in which Paul Pierce was not the Celtics' high scorer.
When these teams met in November, Boston won 96-78. Nicolas Batum really struggled in that game, going 2-of-11 for just nine points. The Trailblazers are 11-0 ATS (9.8 ppg) since February 01, 2011 at home after losing the previous matchup in which Nicolas Batum shot worse than 33% from the field. Also, the Trailblazers are 8-0 ATS (11.8 ppg) since March 19, 2011 as a favorite after losing the previous matchup on the road in which Nicolas Batum scored fewer than 10 points. SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: PORTLAND 99, Boston 90

4-Unit Play. #834. Take Charlotte +2 over Temple (Sunday @ 4pm est).

4-Unit Play. #836. Take Purdue -6.5 over Northwestern (Sunday @ 6pm est).

4-Unit Play. #842. Take Hofstra +3.5 over Old Dominion (Sunday @ 7pm est).

I'll try to keep today's analysis relatively brief. But, long story short here is that Charlotte comes off a brutal loss to St. Louis on the road and this is the same team that beat Butler on the road so think about how difficult that is as they try to bounce-back today. I watched the entire Charlotte vs. Temple game and this team just got better as the game went on and fell short by 1 point in the end. Don't be surprised to see Charlotte win this game Outright here. As per Purdue, revenge is always a good motivating factor and though they are not a high potent offense, Purdue needs something positive and this is a team that comes off one of its worst losses of the year at Indiana. They have the motivation to do well here at home as this is the same team that beat a Penn State team by a similar margin who is ranked in the same power ranking range at home. Plus, revenge always helps and Purdue does need a big win here to get to 6-8 in conference play. Finally, Hofstra is just 6-22 but a team that comes off getting hammered by George Mason at home by 29 is likely motivated to play well here today. I also believe that ODU is in for a let down after their big win recently at home against NC Wilmington. Its an ugly play but getting 3.5 points with the home dog here at home coming off an ugly home loss is not a bad idea for us and something we can take our chances on.

4-Unit Play. #812. Take New York -10.5 over Philadelphia 76ers (Sunday @ 7pm est).

The Knicks could win this game in a rout. They have struggled badly of late in trying to put together a positive win. The Sixers are likely a sight for sore eyes coming into today. The Knicks lost to the Sixers earlier this year by a score of 97-80 and though the Sixers come off a loss as well, I like New York to do well here at home as they come off 4 straight losses and you would think that this team has to show some heart here at home and bounce-back. This is the same Knick team that beat the Sixers by 22 on the road and 16 at home and with revenge, coming off a series of losses and a decent public fade here, the Knicks are likely to do well at home and win this game by the 14+ margin this evening.

4-Unit Play. #5. Take Vancouver Canucks -135 over Detroit (Sunday @ 5:05 pm est)
For the first time in (20) seasons, the Red Wings are trying to win without Lidstrom. They have the pieces in place to remain a Stanley Cup contender and to make the playoffs for the (22nd) straight season. Vancouver has quietly rounded into form and once again resembles the team that won last season's Presidents' Trophy and came within (60) minutes of capturing the Stanley Cup two seasons ago. Vancouver prides itself on being the fittest team as they often dominate third period action and with Roberto Luongo between the pipes, he still remains an elite NHL goaltender. Perhaps the biggest sign that things are back to normal is the impressive play of Roberto Luongo. ?Bobby Lu? seems to have quashed any talk of a goalie controversy. Only four Canucks played overseas during the lockout but all the key parts remain intact for the best regular season club in the league. The Canucks are (8-3) in their last (11) overall, (4-1) in their last (5) road games and the Red Wings are (1-5) in their last (6) games playing on no rest. Too much firepower at this stage of the season for this Detroit team that just played last night.
