Betting tips: Music City Bowl spread nears key number

Who’s hot

NCAAF: BYU is 6-0 against the spread in its last six overall.

NCAAF: Mississippi State is 5-1 against the spread in its last six overall and 4-0 against the number in its last four bowl games.

NBA: New Orleans is 6-2-1 against the spread in its last nine home games against Phoenix.

NHL: Washington is 23-9 in its last 32 home games.

NCAAB: The over is 9-3 in Duke’s last 12 home games.

Who’s not

NCAAF: Oklahoma is 1-4 in its last five bowl games.

NCAAF: The over is 2-7 in Rutgers’ last nine overall.

NBA: New Jersey is just 2-7 against the spread in its last nine games against Atlanta.

NHL: Ottawa is 2-8 in its last 10 meetings with Calgary.

NCAAB: Missouri is just 16-37 against the spread in its last 53 road games.

Key stat

50.3 – The Virginia Cavaliers rank second nationally allowing just 50.3 points per game and also rank second in defensive rebounding at 24.3 boards per contest. They have the under on a 6-1 run so far this season heading into Friday’s date with winless Towson.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Murphy Holloway, Mississippi Rebels – Holloway is expected to miss Friday’s matchup with Dayton after suffering a high ankle sprain on Dec. 21. The 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward leads the team averaging 9.6 points per game and also chips in 9.9 points per game on the offensive end.

Game of the day

Iowa Hawkeyes at Oklahoma Sooners (-16.5, 57.5)

Notable quotable

"For Alistair to think that Brock can't take him down is crazy. Brock can and probably will. The question is, can Brock keep Alistair Overeem down?" – UFC president Dana White on Friday’s main event between Brock Lesnar (+120) and Alistair Overeem.

Notes and tips

The Music City Bowl’s pointspread opened with Mississippi State favored by 6.5 points against Wake Forest and continues to hover around -7 at most books. A number of online shops had the Bulldogs set at -7 as of Thursday night while most Vegas sportsbook were still sending out -6.5. However, about 67 percent of Covers.com Consensus bettors were supporting the Bulldogs Thursday night.

New Orleans Hornets guard Eric Gordon will likely sit out Friday night's game against the visiting Phoenix Suns to rest his ailing knee. A swollen knee kept the talented 23-year-old out of the lineup for Wednesday's victory over the Boston Celtics. It isn't clear when Gordon suffered the injury. Marco Belinelli is expected to take Gordon's place in the starting lineup. Gordon scored 20 points in the Hornets' season opener Monday against the Suns, his first game with New Orleans after coming over in a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford isn't holding out much hope of playing in the team's season finale Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Bradford has already missed five games with a serious high ankle sprain, and wasn't thrilled about how he felt after missing Wednesday's practice session. He likely won't see any action in practice until Friday, and only if his ankle has sufficiently improved. Kellen Clemens would likely get the start if Bradford can't go. Bradford has thrown for 2,164 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions in 10 games this season.

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks (-135, 5.5)

When you have the talent that Pavel Datsyuk has, it’s only a matter of time before the points start piling up.

That’s why nobody was really concerned when Datsyuk had just 10 points through the first 16 games of the year. Since then he’s back to his normal self, controlling the flow of the game at both ends of the rink.

He has 28 points in the last 20 games and is a plus-14 over that span and now sits ninth in league scoring with 38 points.

“We’re so spoiled with him playing this way," teammate Niklas Kronwall said of Datsyuk. "Sure, he got off to a little slow start, but right now, he’s got the energy and the passion and he’s all over the ice. Anytime he’s out there he’s making a difference, playing great offensively and defensively.”

With Datsyuk rolling, the Red Wings have won 14 of their last 19 overall. They have had some problems on the road but they’ll be up for this one.

Pick: Red Wings

Nashville Predators at St. Louis Blues (-175, 5)

The Nashville Predators are a different team without captain Shea Weber in the lineup, but they’re trying to stay positive as he battles through concussion symptoms.

Even though Weber is currently listed as doubtful for Friday’s game, Nashville felt a little better by downing Minnesota 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday.

"I mean, it doesn't matter who's in the lineup, if you work hard you're going to give yourself a chance to win,” defenseman Ryan Suter told reporters. “When you have guys like Shea in the lineup, it helps you win, but if we work hard and battle it out, we're going to get some wins."

With Weber leading the team in scoring and plus/minus and trailing only Suter in average ice time, the wins could be few and far between until the captain returns.

Both teams will play close to the vest Friday.

Pick: Under

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets

Miami Heat at Minnesota Timberwolves (8, 208)

If the first few games are any indication, the Miami Heat are going to be tough to get a read on again this year.

After opening up the year with solid wins at Dallas and at home to Boston, the Heat managed to rally from a 16-point deficit against Charlotte and Dwyane Wade hit the game-winning shot to lift the club to a 96-95 victory. That win dropped Miami to 1-2 against the spread.

“You’re going to win some of these games ugly and you need to find ways to grind it out and in different ways,” coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. “Charlotte came out and really jumped us.”

The Heat seem more focused this season and are getting the ball into the paint more. They know they can’t get away with back-to-back sloppy efforts.

Pick: Heat

Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics (N/A)

For the first time since the Big Three came to Boston, the Celtics have slumped to an 0-3 start and they’re hearing all about it from the Beantown media.

Their latest loss was especially troubling. Boston was pounded 97-78 by the Hornets as a 4.5-point favorite and coach Doc Rivers didn’t mince words after the loss.

“I don’t think we were tight. I thought we just played tired,” Rivers told reporters. “We looked old tonight. It happens. It was frustrating because early on we had things going, and then we turned the ball over in that one stretch where they got the lead, and got their energy up. I never thought we could match their energy.”

With Paul Pierce still questionable for this contest with his heel injury, the Celtics need to step it up. This is when Kevin Garnett, who’s averaging only 11.7 points per game, needs to throw a tantrum in the locker room before the game instead of on the court after the game.

The Celtics have covered in two of three despite the losing skid, but need to start picking it up.

Pick: Celtics

College funds: Friday's best NCAAB bets

Western Michigan Broncos at Duke Blue Devils (-20.5, N/A)

One of the major factors you have to consider here is Duke’s long layoff.

The Blue Devils head into this one after a 10-day break and have played just once over the last 19 days. That win was a 90-63-63 victory over NC-Greensboro that Duke narrowly missed the cover as a 30-point favorite.

Duke shot 53 percent from the floor, including 58 percent in the second half en route to its third straight win since falling 85-63 to No. 2 Ohio State on Nov. 29.

Duke has one of the most balanced offenses in the country and has had five different players lead the team in scoring. Freshman sensation Austin Rivers leads the way with 15 points per game for the Blue Devils, who are one of seven teams in the nation that have five or more players averaging double figures.

Defensively, Duke, which has won 41 straight home games, has held its opponent to fewer than 70 points in seven of its 11 contests, including all five home games.

Western Michigan has covered in its last three lined games but this test will prove too tough for the Broncos.

Pick: Duke

Mississippi Rebels at Dayton Flyers (-4.5, N/A)

The Rebels were rolling along at 9-1 straight up before dropping consecutive games to Southern Mississippi and Middle Tennessee State before Christmas.

Meanwhile, Dayton has rebounded to win four of its last five straight up as new coach Archie Miller looks to make his mark with the Flyers.

“Teams can’t come into our building and do what they want to do and leave and feel good about themselves,” Miller told reporters. “We have to compete. We have to have guys playing a lot, lot smarter in our system, not fouling. And on the offensive end of the floor, we need some guys (regaining) some confidence.”

The Flyers catch a break with Mississippi forward Murphy Holloway out with a high ankle sprain. He leads the Rebels in rebounding and Dayton should be able to come through here with its balanced scoring.

Pick: Dayton

What bettors need to know: Friday's bowl game action

Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. BYU Cougars (+1, 56.5)

ARMED FORCES BOWL STORYLINES:

1. Brigham Young started 1-2 before winning nine of its last 10 and Tulsa rebounded from a 1-3 start to win seven in a row before losing to Houston in its last game. All four of Tulsa’s losses are to teams that were in the top 10 at the time.

2. Fifth-year senior quarterback G.J. Kinne and running back Ja’Terian Douglas, who leads the nation with 8.2 yards a carry, key a Tulsa offense which ranks 23rd in the country in scoring (34.1) and yards (454.4). BYU is ranked 17th in the nation in total defense.

3. Tulsa has won three straight bowl games, averaging 56.7 points. BYU has won four of its last five bowl outings and will try to win its 10th game for the fifth time in six seasons.

4. BYU won the first six meetings between the two former Western Athletic Conference teams, but Tulsa won the last one 55-47 in 2007.

TV: ESPN, ESPN3.com.

LINE: BYU opened as a 2-point favorite and was bet up to -3, before bettors came back on Tulsa and flipped the spread to +1

WEATHER: Clear skies are in the forecast for Dallas, with game-time temperatures in the high 50s. Winds will blow at 6 mph from the NW.

ABOUT TULSA (8-4, 7-1, Conference USA, 7-5 ATS): The Golden Hurricane have plenty of weapons. Douglas and Trey Watts have both rushed for more than 800 yards. Kinne, with 900 career passing yards, has 25 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions – two against Houston. Willie Carter is Kinne’s top target with 61 catches for 868 yards. Kicker Kevin Fitzpatrick is 15-for-17 this season and is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 296 points. Linebacker Curnelius Arnick averaged 11.8 tackles, tied for sixth in the nation. All-Conference USA defensive end Tyrunn Walker is listed as questionable with a leg injury. The Golden Hurricane has an 8-9 all-time bowl record.

ABOUT BYU (9-3, 8-4 ATS): The Cougars have put up good numbers defensively in their first season as an independent, averaging 15 points against in wins and losing only 17-16 to Texas. But BYU, which has an 11-7-1 all-time record in bowls, has only one victory over a team with a winning record (Utah State). Quarterback Riley Nelson is 5-1 as a starter after replacing Jake Heaps. Nelson has 16 touchdown passes, only five interceptions and 376 yards rushing. Wide receiver Cody Hoffman has caught 53 passes for 821 yards and Ross Apo has nine touchdown receptions. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy leads the team with 10 tackles for loss and five sacks.

TRENDS:

* Golden Hurricane are 4-1 ATS in their last five Bowl games.
* Cougars are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
* Under is 4-1 in Golden Hurricane's last five Bowl games.
* Over is 4-1 in Cougars' last five non-conference games.

PREDICTION: Tulsa 41, BYU 31 – Kinne shakes off a rough game as the Golden Hurricane win a shootout.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Iowa State Cyclones (+1.5, 44.5)

PINSTRIPE BOWL STORYLINES:

1. Rutgers fell short in its bid for the Big East’s automatic BCS berth. Iowa State played a big role in the BCS in its own way, scoring one of the biggest upsets of the season when it knocked off then-No. 2 Oklahoma State in double overtime Nov. 18.

2. The Scarlet Knights came into the final weekend of the regular season with a share of the Big East title and a chance at a BCS bowl. But they committed six turnovers and fell behind by 30 points in the third quarter en route to a 40-22 setback against Connecticut.

3. Rutgers has been going back and forth between sophomore Chas Dodd and freshman Gary Nova at quarterback, with each struggling to claim the job outright. The two have the best security blanket in the Big East in receiver Mohamed Sanu, who set the conference record with 109 receptions and totaled seven touchdowns.

4. The Cyclones, who average 181.2 yards on the ground, will put their high-scoring attack up against the Scarlet Knights and their 12th-ranked scoring defense. Rutgers’ strength is in the secondary, where it is holding teams to 168.3 passing yards. Iowa State should have room to run.

TV: 3:20 p.m., ESPN, ESPN3.com.

LINE: Rutgers opened as a 2-point favorite and has dropped to -1.5

WEATHER: Rain is in the forecast for Yankee Stadium, with a 33 percent chance of showers. Game-time temperatures will dip into the mid 40s while winds will blow South at 6 mph.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (6-6, 3-6 Big 12, 7-5 ATS): The Cyclones went up against seven ranked teams during the regular season and knocked off two, claiming upsets at Texas Tech and in the shocker versus Oklahoma State. Iowa State also holds a win at Rutgers’ nemesis Connecticut from September and played strong at Kansas State in a 30-23 loss to end the regular season. Coach Paul Rhodes was given a 10-year contract extension but will be coaching his final game with offensive coordinator Tom Herman, who is taking a job under Urban Meyer at Ohio State.

ABOUT RUTGERS (8-4, 4-3 Big East, 8-4 ATS): The Scarlet Knights’ vaunted defense was put in a tough position against Connecticut thanks to three combined interceptions by Dodd and Nova. Dodd also lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown in the second quarter. When the two play mistake-free football, the defense usually leaves Rutgers in a strong position. Dodd and Nova have each been getting practice reps and coach Greg Schiano won’t be afraid to pull either quarterback. The Scarlet Knights have recent experience playing at Yankee Stadium after beating Army 27-12 in the Bronx on Nov. 12.

TRENDS:

* Scarlet Knights are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five bowl games.
* Cyclones are 6-2 ATS in their last eight non-conference games.
* Over is 4-1 in Scarlet Knights' last five Bowl games.
* Under is 4-0-1 in Cyclones' last five Bowl games.

PREDICTION: Iowa State 33, Rutgers 20 - The Cyclones are battle-tested from the Big 12 slate while the Scarlet Knights have yet to prove themselves against top competition.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (-6.5, 48)

MUSIC CITY BOWL STORYLINES:

1. Mississippi State has won its past four bowl appearances, including a 52-14 thrashing of Michigan in last season’s Gator Bowl. But the Bulldogs had to beat arch-rival Mississippi in the regular-season finale just to become bowl eligible after struggling in the rugged SEC West.

2. Whether Chris Relf or Tyler Russell start at quarterback for Mississippi State remains a question. Both are splitting snaps in practice. Relf started the season on top of the depth chart and appeared in 10 games. Russell took over starting duties at midseason and played in nine games.

3. Wake Forest will look to trump a Bulldogs’ defense allowing only 19.9 points per game with the play of quarterback Tanner Price, a sophomore who completed 60.9 percent of his passes and threw for 20 touchdowns. Price’s top target, Chris Givens, caught nine touchdowns and finished with 1,276 receiving yards.

4. The Demon Deacons have not appeared in a bowl game since beating Navy 29-19 in the 2008 EagleBank Bowl.

TV: ESPN, ESPN3.com.

LINE: Mississippi State opened at -6.5 and has remained steay at that numbers with some books going to -7.

WEATHER: Cloudy skies and game-time temperatures in the high 50s are in the forecast for Nashville. Winds, blowing SW, will reach speeds of up to 11 mph.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (6-6, 2-6 SEC West, 6-6 ATS): Expectations were high in Starkville following a nine-win season in 2010. But the Bulldogs lost to Auburn and LSU in a five-day span in mid-September and never fully recovered. Whoever plays quarterback will look to running back Vick Ballard to lead the way. Ballard rushed for 1,009 yards and eight touchdowns this season, including 144 yards against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs are in a bowl game for the second consecutive season for the first time since 1999-2000, and have won their past four bowl appearances.

ABOUT WAKE FOREST (6-6, 5-3 ACC, 7-5 ATS): A 35-30 upset victory over then-No. 23 Florida State on Oct. 8 pushed the Demon Deacons to 4-1 on the season. But Wake would drop five of its final seven, including an ugly 41-7 loss at home to Vanderbilt in the regular-season finale. Price will have to spark the offense as Wake Forest ranks 96th in the nation in rushing offense. Leading rusher Brandon Pendergrass posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games against Clemson (134 yards) and Maryland (125 yards) late in the season.

TRENDS:

* Demon Deacons are 4-1 ATS in their last five bowl games.
* Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last four bowl games.
* Under is 4-1 in Demon Deacons' last five Bowl games.
* Under is 7-3 in Bulldogs' last 10 games overall.

PREDICTION: Mississippi State 24, Wake Forest 20 - The Bulldogs find a way to keep Price in check just enough to pull out a close victory.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Oklahoma Sooners (-14, 57.5)

INSIGHT BOWL STORYLINES

1. Oklahoma opened the season with national-championship expectations, but the loss of leading receiver Ryan Broyles and leading rusher Dominique Whaley combined with a sloppy defense has Bob Stoops’ Sooners outside of a BCS bowl for only the second time in the last six years. Iowa also enters off a down year by Kirk Ferentz’s standards, but has won three straight bowl games, including the last two as underdogs.

2. Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones, billed as a Heisman candidate for the first half of the season, didn’t throw a touchdown pass in his last three games and had five interceptions. Iowa junior quarterback James Vandenberg was up-and-down, but finished with 23 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He'll be missing his backfield mate, leading rusher Marcus Coker, who has been suspended for the game. Coker set Iowa bowl records for rushing attempts (33) and rushing yards (219) in the Hawkeyes' 27-24 win over Missouri in last year's Insight Bowl.

3. Stoops played safety at Iowa, when Ferentz was the Hawkeyes’ offensive line coach in the early 1980s.

4. Ferentz has been mentioned as a candidate for the Kansas City Chiefs vacancy.

TV: ESPN.

LINE: Oklahoma opened at -15.5 and has been bet down to as low as -13.5.

WEATHER: Clear skies and temperatures in the high 50s is in the forecast for Sun Devil Stadium. Winds, blowing WSW, will blow at 2 mph.

ABOUT IOWA (7-5, 4-4 Big Ten, 5-7 ATS): A difficult offseason was followed by an up-and-down regular season for the Hawkeyes. They had an impressive win over BCS-bound Michigan, but also suffered an embarrassing loss to a three-win Minnesota team. Vandenberg has a big-play target in Marvin McNutt to throw at the suspect Oklahoma secondary. The Hawkeyes’ defense struggled to pressure the quarterback, which left their secondary vulnerable. Iowa ranked last in the Big Ten in pass defense.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (9-3, 6-3 Big 12, 6-6 ATS): The Sooners are making their 12th straight bowl appearance, a streak spanning Stoops’ entire tenure in Norman. But bowl season hasn’t always been kind to Oklahoma, which has lost three of its last five postseason appearances. Oklahoma was No. 1 in the nation until suffering a stunning upset at home to Texas Tech in late October. The Sooners managed to climb back into the national-title picture, before falling at Baylor. If Jones can’t get the offense clicking, look for backup Blake Bell to get more snaps. Bell was used as a short-yardage specialist as Jones faded late.

TRENDS:

* Hawkeyes are 4-0 ATS in their last four bowl games.
* Sooners are 1-4 ATS in their last five bowl games.
* Over is 5-0-1 in Hawkeyes' last six non-conference games.
* Over is 4-1 in Sooners' last five Bowl games.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma 34, Iowa 28. After a blowout loss at Oklahoma State to end the regular season, the Sooners’ motivation will be tested by the less-talented Hawkeyes.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Oklahoma Sooners

The Insight Bowl is scheduled to go on Friday night in Tempe where the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-5, 5-7 ATS) will look to win their fourth straight bowl game against what could be a very disinterested group of Oklahoma Sooners (9-3, 6-6 ATS); kick-off from Sun Devil Stadium is set for 10:00 ET with ESPN & ESPN3.com covering the live broadcasts.

Since going 11-2 SU and defeating Georgia Tech in the 2009 Orange Bowl, the Hawkeyes program has been marred in mediocrity compiling 15-10 SU & 11-13-1 ATS records the last two seasons. Head coach Kirk Ferentzs kids were an afterthought in the Big Ten in 2011 placing fourth in the newly formed Legends (http://www.cappersmall.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebannerzone.com%2Faw. aspx%3FB%3D20%26A%3D155%26Task%3DClick) Division with a 4-4 SU record. Its biggest win of the season came in the outright variety at home where it beat the Michigan Wolverines 24-16 as four-point underdogs at the beginning of November. The squad went on to lose two of its final three games against both Michigan State and Nebraska with a win at Purdue sandwiched in between. Save for the defense allowing just 23.2 points per game (#42), Iowa failed to do anything else above average on either side of the pigskin. Iowa won just one of its five games played away from Iowa City, and managed just a 1-3 ATS record the four times it was dogged.

Head coach Bob Stoops squad entered their 2011-12 campaign with lofty expectations ranking amongst the top five in both the coaches and AP polls. OU looked to be well on its way towards once again partaking in a BCS Bowl after compiling a perfect 6-0 SU mark and 4-2 ATS record over the course of its first six games played which included wins over Florida State, Missouri, and Texas. Then October 22nds home date with Texas Tech arrived, and the Sooners were shockingly upset at home 41-38 as near 30-point favorites. Though the club rebounded with back-to-back annihilations of both Kansas State and Texas A&M, Oklahoma dropped a huge one in Waco out of their bye before earning a non-covering win against Iowa State heading into its Bedlam match-up with Oklahoma State. When the dust cleared in that one, the Sooners found themselves on the wrong side of a 44-10 beatdown which dashed any and all hopes of going BCS bowling. Because of that, this trip to the Insight Bowl could play out to a similar result as in 2009 when they just got past Stanford as double-digit Sun Bowl favorites.

Before plopping your hard-earned money down on Iowa plus the points here, know that the teams leading rusher and the Big Tens second best back, RB Marcus Coker (1384 yards), has been suspended for this game. Still, Iowas covered each of its L/4 bowl games and has gone 7-1 ATS the L/8 times it was installed an underdog of 10.5 points or more. OUs gone 7-0 SU & 6-1 ATS following its L/7 SU losses to conference rivals, but its also 1-4 ATS its L/5 as a bowl game chalk. The under is 7-2 the L/9 times Iowa lined up against a member of the Big 12, while its 4-1 the L/5 times the Sooners played off an outright defeat.

BYU +109 over Tulsa PINNACLE

Tulsa boasts an impressive résumé for an 8-4 team, with losses only to top-10 outfits Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Boise State and Houston. The development of quarterback G.J. Kinne and a veteran offensive line helped the Golden Hurricane overcome a lack of experienced skill position players. There are no impressive wins on this team's schedule but most of them were blowouts and there's no shame in any of the losses. BYU has a similar résumé, with losses to the three best teams on its slate, accompanying a host of lopsided victories over weak opponents. The Cougars aren't as explosive as Tulsa, but this BYU defense is easily the best the Hurricane has faced outside of its quartet of highly ranked foes. Seventh-year BYU boss Bronco Mendenhall is an accomplished bowl coach, and his edge in postseason experience over Tulsa rookie Bill Blankenship could be the decisive advantage in this evenly matched affair. Play: BYU +109 (No bets)

RUTGERS –102 over Iowa State PINNACLE

Expect a grinding, defensive affair from two teams that prefer to run but aren't that great at it. Iowa State lacks explosive playmakers in the passing game, relying on James White and Jeff Woody for yards on the ground. Rutgers is transitioning from a failed spread approach back to the downhill identity that served the Scarlet Knights so well during the Ray Rice era. Iowa State takes its bowls seriously and is not a program we expect to fade in the postseason. However, Rutgers has a few advantages that could turn this defensive struggle in the Knights' favor. Rutgers has the far better defense, big-play special teams units and will be playing in front of a partisan crowd in a stadium in which it beat Army just a month ago. The Knights also feature the matchup's best playmaker in record-setting wideout Mohamed Sanu. Most important, Iowa State is a turnover-prone group, ranking 118th in giveaways, while the ball-hawking Knights are the country's fifth-best in takeaways. Yards will be at a premium but a Rutgers team that ranks just 100th in total offense yet 66th in scoring finds a way to get the job done even when the chains aren't moving. Play Rutgers –102 (Risking 2.04 units to win 2).

Wake Forest +7 over Mississippi St. SportsInteraction

The current identity of the Wake Forest offense plays into Mississippi State's hands, as the Bulldogs linebackers are inexperienced but the secondary is among the nation's best. Nor is this a great matchup for a Wake Forest defense that has struggled with physical rushing attacks. Still, even with the matchup disadvantages, we are unwilling to lay postseason points to a Jim Grobe-coached team. After falling out of the SEC West race all that remained for Mississippi State was to claim bowl eligibility and a third straight win over hated rival Ole Miss. Those missions accomplished, it's hard to see the Dogs getting fired up to play a historical ACC doormat. All State knows about Wake is that the Deacons dropped a 41-7 decision to Vandy in their final game. It's almost impossible for State not to be overconfident here, while Wake is itching to prove it's better than its last outing, especially given a chance at redemption against an SEC opponent. Another red flag that should concern Bulldog backers is that all the money is coming in on the chalk. No question Mississippi State matches up well here but a fresh Wake team is a lot better than the out-of-gas squad Vanderbilt saw. A touchdown is too much weight to lay with an offensively challenged team against an opponent that’s “expected to lose” with an excellent track record both in bowls and as an underdog. Play: Wake Forest +7 (Risking 2.2 units to win 2).

Iowa +13½ over OKLAHOMA PINNACLE

Iowa RB Marcus Coker is out and unlike last year's Insight, when Coker had his coming-out party in relief of suspended tailback Adam Robinson, there's no comparable talent waiting his turn down on the depth chart. The loss of Coker will really hurt Iowa's ability to control the clock and keep Oklahoma's offense off the field. Still, it's impossible to endorse an Oklahoma team that's down to just two backs itself and is suffering the worst team wide wear and tear in the country. Sooner Nation is melting down after the preseason No. 1 fell to 9-3 and a minor bowl berth. Oklahoma now finds itself in the classic spot of the disappointed big bowl favorite. Bob Stoops has done well in non-BCS bowls, but those previous appearances were in known retooling years, not seasons of dashed high expectations, and he's just 4-8 against the spread in all bowls. With three trips in five years, this is a team that's grown weary of Fiesta Bowls. It's unlikely the Sooners can get that fired up about yet another trip to Phoenix, this one for the Insight. Iowa's pass defense is miserable, and Oklahoma should roll up some serious yardage, but at least the Hawkeyes will play hard for retiring coordinator Norm Parker. Just a few stops might be enough for the Iowa defense, as Big Ten receiving leader Marvin McNutt is prepared to be the go-to guy in Coker's absence and Iowa is capable of landing some blows on an underachieving Oklahoma pass defense. Add the Sooners state of mind after being selected to play in a small Bowl game and that makes the Cyclones the only side worth having. Play: Iowa State +13½ (Risking 2.14 units to win 2).

Nashville Predators +161

Take note that the Preds are coming off a big 2-1 shootout victory against the Wild, while the Blues are coming off a road loss in Detroit and have played 3 of their last 4 on the road. Nashville has already taken both meetings between these two teams, including one game in St Louis (a 4-2 win), with Pekka Rinne coming up big in both wins. This is a good chance to get on the Predators coming off a win with Rinne playing solid.

Game: Rutgers vs. Iowa State (Friday 12/30 3:20 PM Eastern)
Pick: Iowa State -1 (-110)

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will face the Big-12's Iowa State Cyclones in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights finished an unexpected 8-4 and challenged for the Big East Championship. That has a nice ring to it, but the Big East was loaded with mediocre teams that seemingly all had a chance for the title, because on any given week they were all capable of beating each other and often times did. It was a similar story last year with UConn, surprisingly winning it only to get hammered vs. another Big-12 team Oklahoma. Iowa State looked hopelessly lost after a four-game losing streak, but pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season handing Oklahoma State their first loss for their sixth win. They came close to pulling another upset on the road in their finale against Kansas State. This team may be 6-6, but they have played a much rougher schedule and became much more competitive late in the season. They held Oklahoma State to 31 points and their season low was 30, and Oklahoma to 26 which was their second lowest at the time they played them. The Cyclones are now 5-0 ATS against teams with a winning record the last five times they have faced them. Go with Iowa State in this one.

Toronto +8½ over DALLAS Pinnacle
The Mavericks stock was incredibly low after two absolutely putrid games to open the season. Dallas was embarrassed by Miami on opening day and followed that up with an even worse 22-point loss against Denver. With a 0-2 record and looking lost out there, the Mavericks traveled to Oklahoma City last night where nobody gave them much of a chance. As a 6½-point pooch, Dallas lost by two points on a buzzer beater trey by Kevin Durant. Dallas played well, they covered and although they’re 0-3, some credibility is restored. Meanwhile, the Raptors have a following in Canada and other than that, they’re a tiny dot on the NBA map. In other words, when you wager against the Raps, you’re going to pay a little extra to do so and that’s precisely the case here. The Raps have two games under their belt and still no credibility, as they beat Cleveland (big deal) and lost at home to Indiana just like they were expected to. That said, they’re a bit better than most realize. They have a deep and competent bench, they’re actually playing some strong defense and they have direction for the first time in years under new coach Dwayne Casey. Casey, an assistant with the Mavericks the last three seasons, knows this enemy well and should have his undervalued squad well prepped to compete. Possible upset. Play: Toronto +8½ (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

New Jersey +11½ over ATLANTA Pinnacle
Wagering at the beginning of the year provides many good opportunities and this one qualifies. The Hawks are 2-0 after blowing out New Jersey by 26 in the opener and followed that one with an 18-point win over Washington. They barely broke a sweat in either game and now this complacent club may figure all they have to do is show up. Atlanta is grossly overvalued here based on two games. The Hawks won 44 games and made the second round of the playoffs last season but that can be misleading. They gave up more points than they scored in the regular season, went 10-17 after the All-Star break, lost one of the top sixth men in free agency (without replacing him) and they’ll be without Kirk Hinrich for nearly half the season. Atlanta's bench looms as a major weakness. The Nets are the hardest team to project because of all the potential wild cards. While Kris Humphries finally signed, they still have a ton of cap room and might sign Andrei Kirilenko. For now, the Nets are a mishmash. Star guard Deron Williams has been playing in real games since October and should be in tip-top shape and Brook Lopez can be productive as a secondary offensive weapon in the middle. That's a solid offensive foundation and certainly one that should improve on last season's 27th-place standing in offensive efficiency. They should be respectable all year but two bad losses in succession combined with two easy wins by Atlanta allow us to take back a bunch of extra points here. Play: New Jersey +11½ (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).
