    BIG AL MCMORDIE

At 7:10 pm, our selection is on the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox 'over' the total. A few AL teams have acquired former closers to help bolster their bullpens for the stretch drive. The Twins got Brian Fuentes from the Angels and the Yankees picked up Kerry Wood from the Indians. Wood has been phenomenal for New York with a 0.56 ERA in 14 appearances while the the jury is still out on Fuentes with the Twins. Not to be left out, Tampa traded for closer Chad Qualls from the Diamondbacks to serve as a late-inning reliever/set-up man for closer Rafael Soriano. Unfortunately, the jury has already ruled on Qualls as he has been absolutely putrid with his new AL team with a 6.17 ERA in 15 appearances with the Rays. Not surprisingly, what was a pretty good bullpen in Tampa has been taking a beating lately and this team will need to find a way to stop the relief pitching bleeding if it is going to compete with the Yankees the rest of the way. Fenway Park can be a pretty tough spot for mediocre relievers and even though the Rays have lefthanded ace David Price going to the mound tonight, as good as he is, Price is typically not an eight to nine inning pitcher (in only one of his last nine starts has Price gone more than seven innings). Daisuke Matsuzaka will get his 21st start of the season and the over is 7-2 in Dice-K's last nine starts vs. Tampa. American League Total of the Week on the 'over.' As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
